Several years ago (2006) http://www.talonclub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10606&highlight=vonage

I had posted on here about Vonage.. afterwards, I made the switch and have loved it ever since.. However, I am now looking at Ooma. VOIP like Vonage, doesnt require a computer like Magic Jack, and is a one price once, free phone calls after that.. would be nice to have no phone bill, although I will probably go for the Premier service and pay the 10 bucks a month for the extra features. Anyone here using this or have first hand knowledge?

Post up.

Yup.. I have Ooma. I've been using it for ~3months. I like it. If you're worried about security, they are one of the few that actually encrypt the data going back to them.

The voice quality is very good on my first line, but my second line seems to break up a little. That's fine with me, I don't really use the second line. My Dsl only has 768 up, and it seems to do the job just fine. My family kept commenting on how clear it was compared to my cell phone.

I did get the old white box one, not the new telo. I read where people said the dect6 phone that came with it was crap. So I just use my own phones with the white box. If you get the old white one, it is free usage for life, unless you want the features of premier. The telo charges you something like $15 annually to take care of some of the taxes and fees they have to pay. The premier features are well worth the $100 for me.

It seems they do have issues with out going caller id. My numbers still show up as unknown. I called them about a month ago and they still haven't fixed it.

The only thing I really worry about is the viability of the company. It seems they don't have much of a model to bring $$$. I figure if it lasts 6 months or so, I've got my money back.

Thanks Sandman.. we are leaning towards doing this.

What really makes it better than Vonage?

My parents moved to Trinidad and Tobago for 18 months. I purchased a Vonage phone, registered it in Arlington and sent it down with them. It was great because they could call back to the states for free and I could call them as a local call.

Of course, now that they are home there is no real reason to have it.

#1 reason
No monthy fees.

You buy the hardware, and there is a potential annual fee that's like $15 or something. Other than that, you don't have to pay a dime to use it.

moving from ATT to Vonage.. saved 600 per year

moving from Vonage to Ooma..will save 360 per year.. if I go with basic plan, if I go with Premier plan then I will save 240 per year.

Twenty a month doent sound like much until you realize I have been with Vonage for 4 yrs and thats 2400 saved.. I could save another 1000 over the same time frame with Ooma
