According to the IRS, nearly 100,000 federal civilian employees owed $962 million in unpaid federal income taxes in 2008. When retirees and military are included, more than 276,000 people owed $3 billion. Currently, only IRS employees can be terminated for non-payment of federal income taxes.
Federal employees enjoy tremendous job security. Since 2000, executive branch civilian FTE employment, excluding the Postal Service, has increased from 1.89 million to 2.18 million, a 15% increase. Private sector employment decreased 3% from 110.2 million to 107.1 million.
