I have only put a few hundred miles on my new short block and it is burning oil(actually smoking out the side pipes). it only happens when during cruising at partial throttle and then kicking it open to about anything over 50%. does not do it any other time. unfortunately I cannot remember much about these motors. BMW has taken over my whole brain. I don't feel like it is anything like a HG or valve seals and guides because it is all new and those I would assume would be a more constant issue, it also does not have any running issues. cannot I don't think there is an oil separator on anymore and it has the 2.3 KB now. any advice would be appreciated.

I had oiling issues with tall valve covers (BBK). I went back to low profile covers (Trickflow) and haven't had any problems since. You are more likely to have oiling problems under boost with a KB than a stock blower IMO. I would say just monitor your oil loss and see if you can live with it for a while.

well I am actually getting a cloud of smoke under those conditions and it makes the truck pointless if all I can do is let it sit or only cruise under half throttle. also stock valve covers still on it.

thanks for the info though.

I will probably have to do some tear down and inspection when my knee allows me to do so, cause I cant have a problem like this unresolved.

Do you have an oil separator?

Do you have an oil separator? I don't think he knows if there is one on his truck.

I took a peak earlier and didn't see one at least not in the location it was when the eaton was still on. so unless the kb puts it in a new spot I don't think so

If only under boost, blow by the rings, not seated yet. Do you have Dino oil in it.

thats a good question. motors been in for over 6 months and I have only put about 150 miles on it. I cannot remember but will change it asap.

more info on this please? Drain your oil, and replace with conventional oil and new filter. See if that works for ya.

Need to generate heat/friction to properly seat rings. Also want to generate positive and negative pressure on the piston rings. No synthetics and no multi-weight oils, straight Valvoline 30W.
So with the engine warm...full throttle and fully closed throttle, under load, can't do it in the garage, repeat a few hundred times for ~1K miles.
I did this on my L straight from the dealer in the first week.
You need to have a few heat cycles to fully cold, so you can't do it in one day.
Have done this procedure on everything with an engine for decades with success.
There are tons of opinions on how to break in an engine, I am giving you one man's experience/recommendation.
