Saw the aftermath on my way home yesterday. Pretty grim looking. According to witnesses the entire main rotor detached before the helicopter went down. Ouch! Guess that's why they call the nut that holds the main rotor on a "Jesus nut".

Yes that's a terrible tragedy. I sure hate to see that stuff.

Careflight bought that copter from Omniflight. Omniflight has not had a very good flight record as of late. Even though the purchase was several months ago, Omniflight might have some splain'n to do.

Wonder what mechanic left the cotter pin/nut/ off the the tail rotor mount bolt.I know on 737's similar situations we use castlated lock nuts with cotter pins.Terible:eek2:First thing i was tought in aviation is never go on a maintenance test flight.Very sad

It was the main rotor that detached, which then cut off the entire tail boom before flying off into LaLa land, leaving the poor occupants in a rock, whcih did what rocks will do.

Ohh.I heard witnesses say the tail rotor flew off before it went bad(from the news). You couldnt pay me to ride on a helecopter.Guess thats why the auto-rotate hit a bit hard.

Unfortunately no main rotor, no autorotation. Thoughts and prayers with the families.
