The diesel served its 100k and has gone on to a happy pasture. I looked at several new and used crew cab half tons. I decided on the new F150. Ford did some significant updating to the 09 up trucks. They made the best crew cab to date with a flat and spacious load floor. The frame is stiffer and they finally installed a 6 speed auto trans to catch up with GM. While the 6.2L 400hp engine is due for 2011 I couldn't wait that long. The 3 valve 5.4L does good enough with the 6 speed auto. I would consider it a heavy half ton truck. I have seen a huge trend of truck owners stepping out of F250 diesels and going back to F150's for their needs. Short of all out heavy hauling the F150 is a capable recreational hauler. Plus it is a LOT cheaper than the current F250 diesel which stickers in the 50's and may get 10-13mpg...
I rolled 5 k miles this weekend and it has already been put to work. The ride is very smooth and quiet. The dogs love the rear cab room. They can lay spread out and not touch each other. The fuel economy is as expected from a Ford V8 truck. It seems to be about 10-11 towing the travel trailer, 14 city and 17 hwy.
We just got back from a 2k mile week long trip through Colorado. It hauled the TT over the passes just fine. Then we dropped the trailer at the state park and ran off road back road trails all week. The truck did everything great. The factory 36gal fuel tank is perfect for long trips.
