OK, most of you guys are generations ahead of me technically. What's the verdict, Kindle or Nook, and why? Recommendations? TIA

Are you really just wanting something to read books on(ebook reader)? Or are you wanting to be able to run apps and surf the web as well(tablet)?
You'll have to figure out what matters to you. Things such as ease of reading, battery life, connectivity, color vs black and white, touch screen or buttons, the ability to run apps, the ability to surf the web, and connectivity just to name a few. Don't just limit yourself to the Nook and the Kindle. There are several devices out there and more coming very soon.
I'm actually looking for a cheap tablet. This Christmas season there will be alot of new devices on the market. I've decided to wait and see what comes up around black friday.

I really just want an ebook reader. Not looking for something like an ipad. My only real concern with the Kindle is the lack of epub compatibility.

I just picked up a Nook. Seems to be all I need, which is book reading. Haven't used it much, but I think I like it. I bought the Nook because it's readily available at B&N. If I have a problem, I can take it back to the store. Don't have to fuss with shipping, or deal with someone on the phone.

Brian,
Kim has had a Kindle Gen 1 for several years. She loves it.. takes a minute to download a book wirelessly, wherever she is. The screen clarity is very good and you can change the font size.. she has apps to move from her Kindle to her Ipod and her Droid phone and not lose her place. She has had to replace her battery once. There seemed to be more available for the Kindle recently but not sure if that is still the case. The pricing on them is very good right now and the Kindle is available from several sources, including Target. There may be more capability with the Kindle for now and it is the most prevalant e-reader for now as well. If you have specific questions, I am sure she would answer them for you.

So, how was that process? I understand you send it back to Amazon and they ship you another Kindle, not necessarily yours. Is that correct?

its like a thin phone battery.. easy to replace, but remember, hers is a Gen 1 version of the Kindle.. so I would double check that on the new ones.

I bought Doug's Kindle a couple of years ago when they were twice as expensive. It has been worth every penny. Like Dana said, I bounce back and forth between my computer, my phone, and my Kindle depending on where I am. IMO, for an avid reader who buys books, a Kindle is a must.
As for customer service, Amazon's is top notch on the Kindle. I dropped mine and it quit working while it was still under warranty. I called Amazon and told them. They overnight-ed me a new one for free and even sent me a return label to send the old one back. It cost me nothing and I had a new Kindle in less than 24 hours. In order to sell Kindle books, your Kindle needs to work, so they do everything in their power to get it to you ASAP.

I've always found Amazon's CS to be top notch, too. Absent some more Nook votes I think I'm going with the 3rd Gen Kindle. I wish I could get the Dallas Morning News on it, as I think the Star Telegram is a distant second.
Dennis, I'll take any words of wisdom you're offering on nookie, as well. ;)

E book costs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I thought an e book download would be relatively affordable. Hence the purpose of a Kindle... When I bought it the ad said most books under 10 bucks... Well, the first book I needed to buy was 30 bucks! 32 bucks for the hard back paper version! Why in the heck would I pay 30 bucks for a download when I can have the hardback for 2 bucks more!

the stats are right - lots of old books no one wants are available for under $10 everything else is pricey
great for the publisher - no printing - no shipping - HUGE margins

I haven't pulled the trigger on one yet but I was under the same assumption as Terry. I would expect the book to cost 1/2 to 2/3 the cost of a hardback version.

Just got a Kindle for the wife. Two things:
Sure, you can still buy the hardback for a bit more. Good luck lugging all those physical books around on vacation, etc. Should the e-book be cheaper? Perhaps, but there is a huge advantage to the book not taking up "space" for you.
Also, did you know that there are ways to obtain books online very similar to software, tv shows, or any other type of digital media? Kindle can read those too. Just saying.

So there is something like a 'N apster' for books? Do tell.

Many best sellers can be found on BitTorrent, just like music. They are scanned into a PDF format. I have heard you can convert that file to a format Kindle can read.

This is one of the great features of an ebook, plus you can change the size of the type, it doesnt lose where you are in the book, you can move from the Kindle to your Ipad to your smartphone (droid and iphone)

yes, kinda sorta but you wont get in trouble, its free to all

do a search on amazon for a $0.00 price, plus you can find www sites too
remember, like anything else know your prices.. also, the other ebooks charge the same as retail on a book.. you do get a LOT of convenience plus if you erase a book off, you can add it back on for free if you bought it through Amazon, they keep a record of what you bought. its always available to download.. and dont forget if you want a book, you just download i t in a matter of minutes and no trip needed to the bookstore. and its 24/7/365..

I was hoping this would replace the paper books she uses at work but I am thinking not. After seeing all of the highlighting and page marking in the hardback. She probably won't be able to referrence the Kindle during group sessions. I guess it will be a recreational novelty. I was just pissed that the download was 30 bucks and hardback book was 32...:bs
