k5 dash repair

The old K5 dash has a few cracks in it, and since I have it out for the heater core replacement.
Has anyone repaired and old padded dash?
What are good processes and materials for doing this?
Good source for a replacement? not really looking for a cap, but that might be the best alternative?

Never done a repair, but I put a cap on a '78 Datsun 280Z in college. Looked pretty good except for the lower edge about midway down the face of the gauges, making it obvious that it was a cap.

As a general rule, I don't like caps. I have never seen one that didn't require extra work to cover up places that don't fit correctly (like Brian said). But if you are not a professional interior guy (replace old padding and replace dash material) that is about the only affordable option. Or put a rug over it like Doug suggested.

Its like a professional hair transplant or just buying a toupe'. Kinda sorta. :cool:

Yup, did that in a '72 Porsche, it was/is obvious too.

Yes, but too costly, I use them for everything on the K5 that I can't get at Autozone or the Dealer and the Dealer is usually 15% cheaper if they stock it, just proved this again recently on the heater box parts and no shipping cost.
I am going to check with the Dealer tomorrow, they have surprised me before with reasonable prices on old stock.

the difference between a toupee and the dash rug is no one petends its not a rug on the dash.. :rll:

They fit pretty good 20 years ago - I bet they are better now..

Since I drive the K5 almost everyday, I just knew I wouldn't like alternatives so I ordered:
1981-91 Dash OEM-Medium Gray Item :30-819MG

Not sure how to interpret this or if it requires any interpretation...but I haven't gone to just for men yet, but the SO is suggesting that I could consider it.
