View Full Version : Door Hinges

I am about to tackle lubricating all the hinges in the house. I went over to ask.com and read the links they brought up.. my thought is to clean the pin and then apply either white lithium grease or maybe some wheel bearing grease to the pin and put it back in.. this will be a real production because we have about 31 doors in the house. The ones downstairs have 4 hinges due to their height. So I am setting up a mobile workstation to take to each door to save time.

I would like to see if anyone else has a better solution. I did try a spray lubricant but its all over the back of the hinges now and looks bad, so I have to clean that stuff off at the same time too.

WD40 or a Silicon spray and a rag and call it good-make it easy for you

WD40 or a Silicon spray and a rag and call it good-make it easy for youI use the silicon spray. Does not leave a residue, put does not last as long as grease - but long enough (6-months) Teflon dry spray works real well but is hard to locate and you have to remove the pins so it's just a laborious as your proposal. The teflon dry spray will last a looong time.

whats the goal ?
Reduce squeaks ?
reduce friction to make doors close easier ?
any type of grease or oil will simply attract dirt and dust and look nasty in a month

Very few squeak repairs are permanent, just because of the reason for the squeak- unusual friction in the hinge. This friction can be caused by settling which puts pressure on the hinge, faulty installation, or both. Since lubrication does not solve the problem, but rather addresses the symptom, the squeak may recur after a time.

I use an oil/lube that comes in a tube and has a tip that looks like a needle. The whole device looks like a pen and is about the same size. Squeeze the tube and done. I got it at Lowes but the name escapes me now. I'll look when I get home and post up.

mostly squeaks, the issue is that with the house being relatively new, I doubt that the hinges were ever oiled or lubricated. The doors arent hard to close although they are a bit heavy. I did spray them with some kind of light oil before and that ended up (not initially) making a mess and the longevity was short lived. As of now, I am looking at PUMP's suggestion of a telfon based lubricant, although what Shiner may have will be part of the inputs for the solution. The best I have found so far are dry film teflon lubes used by byciclists as they need a lubricant for their moving parts that lasts long and doesnt attract dirt and such.

Just a little tip... you don't have to take the doors off (a major pain). Just do one hinge/pin at a time and you can leave the doors in place.

Simple 3in1 oil will penetrate every crevice with just a couple of drops.

I personally let my exterior doors squeek on purpose. Let's me know when people come and go.

I do the exact same thing, 3in1, and none.

With all these solutions, wonder if I can get me highly funded Fed research grant to study? maybe a longitudinal study over 10 to study the different lubricants and their impact, longevity, lubricity, etc?

you know, to help with spending the unspent federal stimulus money.. :evil

Just read up on capillary action, liquids escape the force of gravity, but it does depend on how tight the pins are and the fluid, but 3in1 appears to work.:D

I am sure to put a research analyst in my study budget request.

IF, I dont use 3 n 1, then these were the contenders for the job..

http://www.finishlineusa.com/products/teflon-plus-lube.htm

Another question, with the 3n1, did you just pop up the pin, without removing it, put some oil on it and knock it back down? or did you take the pin out, clean it off and then oil it, put the pin back in?

No removal, just one drop on the top and each of the 4 gaps below, it just sucks in, and I have whirly birds not ridge vents, but I did clean the soffits.:D

I would try Richardson Bike Mart in your neck of the woods or Bicycles Inc- they have several locations.
