Well I have rested up from my Turbo Gen 1 build and will be pulling the motor and tranny out of Tobbun's truck. His truck is in beautiful shape but has always been weak in appearance under the hood. I have been collecting parts for a while now and will start by stripping the motor down to the short block and pan. I am selling the stock GT 40 heads and replacing them with a nice set of aluminum heads with roller rockers. I have a ported lower intake and will sell the stock lower and GT 40 upper. For the upper, I am using a finned Box intake that I got from Sixpipes, and I have some matching finned valve covers. I will keep the truck Speed density with 42 lb injectors and no FMU. We are keeping the Vortec S trim and will be installing a nice SD cam. While the engine and tranny are out of the truck, I will paint the firewall and inside of the engine compartment gloss black and will probably remove the core support and do the same with that. Anyway, you get the idea. So this will be the restore thread and as always, there will be pictures!

This is my starting point and I will get better pictures of the engine compartment later.

Well, I tore into the truck yesterday. I was surprised to find the complete stock air pump system still on the truck! I pulled it off as a unit and will be giving it to a friend that is into stock stuff. I will be installing the air pump delete pulley in it's place. The radaitor core is almost perfect in this truck so I will just have to clean it up and repaint it Jet Black. Amazingly, this truck appears to have the original upper radiator hose that has the staples in it. This should be a fun project because it is being done for Tobbun, but I think it may also be done for my Granson, who is only 11 right now! May have to take the blower off for him however! lol
Pictures will be taken later today. :tu:

Got any ideas on a tuner once everything is together? Maybe we could double up since I have 42 #ers for my 95 project truck.

I plan to tune it with the Quarter Horse real time for the 42 lb injectors. That is what I did the Turbo with. knana

This truck is not coming apart very easy!! Most of the bolts are just plain steel bolts and very rusted with nothing put on the threads. I have just about got the engine ready to pull but I will take out the tranny first. I will be replacing all the nuts and bolts with stainless and will coat the threads with never sieze when it goes back together. As you can see there is a lot of work and cleanup on this one. I will start using air tools to get some of the stubborn stuff off. The long tubes are ready to be pulled out right now. Going fishing tomorrow but I will be back on it Thursday! Enjoy the pictures.

Continuing with the theme of the truck coming apart hard, The long tubes were practically welded together with rusty bolts and nuts. The stainless header bolts came out real easy but the bolts connecting the rest of the system did not want to come apart. The biggest challenge today was the upper starter bolt. apparently it was cross threaded or the wrong thread bolt was used because it would not come out. I put a 3/8 Air gun on it and nothing happened. I put a half inch air gun on it and it rounded out the bolt. I ended cutting the upper bolt out with a saws-all and the starter finally fell off the truck. I just have to unbolt the torque convertor and the tranny cross member and the tranny will be out of the truck. The motor is ready to lift out now. That is the latest on the project. :d

I got the old motor and tranny out today. The work will now begin on the motor well to convert it to Jet Black along with the hood hinges. I will paint the firewall and both sides. After that, I will pull the core support and spray that Gloss Black as well.

I am not doing anything with the tranny. It has a nice convertor in it already so it will just get painted before it goes back in.

Tomorrow, I will be taking all the Lightning specific pieces along with the harness off the old motor because I have sold the long block along with the upper and lower. More later.....:tu:

If it was all black instead of faded red, I could probably let it go!

I have been taking a break from the long hot summer but I am getting back on the truck project again. I have decided to sell the motor out of the truck and I am having a stroker built. I just ordered the heads today and we will be using Trick Flow Track Heat Aluminum Heads.

With the 61 cc chambers, we might have to step down from the 408 to a 383 in order to get the pistons we want and keep the compression at around 9:1. I am shooting for stock compression just incase we go without the blower down the road. I haven't picked a cam yet but the truck is staying Speed Density so it can't be too radical! I will update this as soon as we decide on the pistons and the stroker kit.
