View Full Version : Front wheel bearing torque spec

Normally when I replace my rotors and install new bearings, seals and grease I just tighten the retaining nut by feel; tighten where I think it should be, spin the rotor a few times and back off just a bit, install the lock cap, cottter pin and lock the nut down.

Not the best way but it has worked for the last 30 years for me.

What I have found on the general boards is 17-25ft lbs, while rotating the rotor and then back off 1/2 turn.

What is the proper torque spec? I haven't been able to find a post specific to our trucks and thought someone might be able to enlighten me!

If it worked for 30 years, why would you change?
I do the same thing and it has worked for 30 years for me too.;)

Right, you'd think I should stick with it. I guess I just getting anal on things. I just thought someone may have a better more technical way of doing it as opposed to shade tree.

I use the same technique on the valve stem caps too! :icon_razz:

After seeing how many have viewed the post, it's safe to say everyone pretty much uses the same technique.

this is typically a pretty anal bunch - if they say you dont need to be MORE anal about something like a torque spec ... You can be pretty relaxed about it ... :icon_lol::evil:tu:

I have this paper on the side of my tool box- printed from a ford shop manual



while rotating clock wise- tighten to 30 ft/lbs
while rotor clockwise, loosen two turns
while rotor counter clock wise tighten to 17-24 ft/lbs
while rotor clock wise, loosen 1/2 turn
while rotor clock wise, tighten to 17 INCH/lbs, not foot/lbs!
install nut retainer and cotter pin

Just did this on the Navi. Makes a big difference. At 17-24 ft/lbs it would spin ~ 2 rotations. At 17 in/lbs, 5-6 rotations.

FYI, I just checked and one of my torque wrenches goes down to 25 inch-lbs and that is about hand tight for me on a nut this size.;)

Dang... I'm glad I stuck with this post. This is the anal stuff I need.

Now fot the torque specs on valve stem caps!:d
