I had a dc jack fail on my laptop. It's a shame a $5 part can ruin a laptop. The laptop worked plenty fine for what my wife did on it, so I hated to just junk it.
After some searching I found a local place that could repair it reasonably.
www.drlaptop.com (http://www.drlaptop.com)
They charge $75 to get the part and replace it. I wouldn't leave my laptop with them until they got the part. Good thing two, after 3 months of failing to get the part they refunded my money. They said if I could obtain the part they would install it for $50. A quick search on Amazon and I found someone who claimed to have the part for $5 shipped. I ordered it and hoped it fit.
Once I got the part, I removed the hard drive from my laptop (never give your hard drive to a repair shop) and took the laptop and part to them. 4 hours later they had the dc jack installed. It works perfectly.
The only complaint I have is the power button is now sunken in. I suspect they lost a rubber dome or something, but the button still works fine. So, I saved a min of $250 (the cost of a cheap laptop) and I don't have to deal with setting up a new laptop.
Anyhow, I thought I would share in case anybody else ran into this.
