Linksys besfr41 - About $50 bucks or less on special.

A little more for one that does wireless. Get one and Ill trade you a Go_rila.com shirt for the install ....

Dennis,

It won't cost much to share a connection to the net over DSL? $50~< through www.tigerdirect.com (http://www.tigerdirect.com)

Now by your LITERAL post, your looking for a direct link between 2 PCS and filesharing, etc? Just wondering?

Ronald

File sharing is not required. Just trying to figure out the best way to have access to DSL on both home PCs. Junior said something about a wireless something-or-other is probably all I would need, but don't really know. I'm sure there is nothing from his computer that I would want to see......on the contrary, I would probably pay not to see what he has on his computer.

This will do it - Make junior pay for it since you are paying for the DSL

Tiger direct has cheaper ones BUT I have never had an issue with the dozens and dozens of Linksys routers I have installed.

More than likely if your neighborhood has DSL available now they also have cable modem. Some places do not though, they only offer one or the other. Usually apartment complexes.

CABLE MODEMS:
For a cable modem (which is definitely better, trust me) all you need is a hub. You put in a lil software, hook up some cables and you're running. You'll also need to get a 2nd IP address from the internet provider for the 2nd PC. If you only have one IP then you can only use the web and chat programs and stuff like that on the 2nd computer. If you get the 2nd IP for your 2nd PC then you have full capabilities and you both share the speed of the entire T1 or DS3, depending on how many T1's they have hooked up in your area.

DSL MODEMS:
For a DSL modem (still fast but cable modem is faster) all you need is your DSL box and a router. You hook your DSL box into the phone line, then take cabling from your DSL box to the router, then take cabling from the router to each pc. Then you're hooked up.

Not sure if all of the DSL providers in this area have this same issue or not, but if you have problems with the 2nd pc (being able to send/receive e-mail) then you'll need to log into your router by going to a web browser and putting in the address of 192.168.0.1 and if you've never set a login or password the login is "admin" and leave the password blank. Don't ever change your password unless it's something you know you'll never forget.

Once you log in DO NOT change anything unless you know you're supposed to change it. hehe. IF you do change something and it messes everything up, there's a tiny hole in the back of the router, use a toothpick/paperclip/safety pin and push it into that hole for 20 seconds and restart it. It'll take you back to your original settings.

Our DSL box had to have the settings changed on the HOME WAN tab to the following: Change the choice under Dynamic/Static IP/ PPPOE .... You need to chose PPOE. Then change your MTU settings to 1492 if they're not already. If you're using Windows XP, you'll need to go into the advanced tab under Firewall and make sure nothing under the rules list shows that port 25 is blocked. If it shows port 25 is blocked you need to download new drivers for your router.

Highest speed I've ever had my DSL modem at was around 384k ... When I had my cable modem I could send files to friends that were 90 meg in about 20-30 seconds. I LOVED IT! :)

That's it. Pretty simple if you know much about computers, if not it's not as hard as you think. ;) hehe

Rest snipped...

I am sure BossHelp.com will get it worked out for Dennis. :D

I will say that it is a good thing that I can't see the IP address logged by the forum when you posted that message, because based on your post, I would totally own you and Ronald's computer's right about now. :d
