One dead, 2 injured in Garland street-racing wreck

10:06 PM CDT on Tuesday, April 20, 2004

By DAN RONAN / WFAA-TV

One man died and two other people remain hospitalized following a Garland accident that's been blamed on street racing.

The wreck occurred Tuesday afternoon on State Highway 78 just north of the George Bush Turnpike. Charles Wagner, a 26-year-old Rowlett resident driving a white Pontiac Trans Am, tried to race another vehicle and ended up colliding with an oncoming car.

"The reports are that ... the white Trans Am was racing," said Garland Police spokesman Joe Harn. "He was northbound on Highway 78 when he lost control, crossed the median and struck (a) 1988 Oldsmobile."

"We've got the description of the other car, and we're trying to run that down and see if we can find that car and get the story from that vehicle," Harn said.

Just hours after the accident, investigators pieced together what happened. Police said the Trans Am and Camaro were side by side, speeding in the northbound lanes.

The Camaro continued and the Trans Am briefly skidded into the shoulder after losing control, then crossed three lanes of traffic and hit the Oldsmobile, which was going southbound. The Trans Am and Oldsmobile came to rest in the shoulder of the southbound lanes.

Investigators said it will be later in the week before they determine just how fast the Camaro was going.

Tuesday's wreck is the second major road racing accident in just six weeks in the Dallas area that has injured innocent bystanders. On March 11, a crash on Marsh Lane sent several people to the hospital; the speeding drivers in that accident are now facing charges.

Garland Police reiterated that their focus now is on finding the driver of the gray Camaro who police say was an accomplice in the fatal high-speed accident

This is the third such accident in as many weeks, and I'm waiting for the cops to pulle me over for even *looking* like I'm speeding.:( They are gonna be out in droves becasue these damn fools who street race do it at the wrong damn time, and can't handle their cars in the first place. They just need to nut it up and take it to the track: if they want to prove how hot they are, do it where they only kill themselves, and not innocents who dind't ask to die because of their stupidity. :throw:
