I've been keeping up with mileage fairly regularly and got a bit of a surprise today. Yes, I reset the odometer as soon as I leave the gas pump.
$35.00 fillup
17.869 gallons of Shell 93
$1.95/gallon :hammer:
186.0 miles.
Maybe an inconsistency in this particular "batch" that made Suzy run off the usual numbers ?

There only (2) things that can kill your fuel mileage that I've learn about thus far since I've owned my L'. First thing is if your throttle position sensor is over 1.0v with the throttle-blade shut, you are most likely gonna use some excess fuel. But you could tell something is wrong by the way it would drive, (surging, jerking,etc....). The other (and this is what I really think it is), if you are familiar with the EGR valve, then you know where it is. The valve has a tube that runs from the exhaust manifold. Well, on top of that, there is a vacuum tube that tells the EGR valve when to open. If memory serves me correctly, when there is no vacuum, the valve is closed. An example would be at WOT. This plastic vacuum tube can lay back on that HOT EGR tube and burn in two. It happened to me and for about a week I was getting about 10mpg. Hope that helps :tu:

I wish I got that much. You will get better milage if you run it lower. I always grab 23-24 gallons. Driving without the weight of the fuel makes for better economy. I filled up this weekend at 1.82 shell by Six Flags.

Trai,
The thing is I'm a bone-stock '02 and haven't experienced any surging, etc.
Also, probably every other day or so, I take a spot-check around the truck and under the hood and make sure that particular vacuum line is away from the EGR line.
It's late or I'd take/post/P-Shop arrows of the vacuum lines, but I know what you're talking about. They're all in check.
I've given it a decent rompin' for weeks in town with a worst of low 11s (mpg) and now with mild in-town romps - I get 10.41 mpg.
Thanks and hey! You do Discount Tire warranty work where random wheel weights fly off, right?

He works for NTB. You shouldn't be losing weights, if so tape over them like the racers do. Maybe the higher temps and running the A/C is taking its toll on mpg..

Ive had mine with various levels of mods for 4 years and I check the MPG every 3 months or so and I have NEVER seen under 12 - Even with a tank FULL of CRAZY driving ...
YOu guys that are getting 10 have issues.. Mine smells like a refinery at idle so I know its rich as hell...
Get those earth killers checked out by your local emissions test place...
PS - Im in california and the tree huggers are rubbing off..
I saw a DSG Lightning with NJ plates towing a uhaul today...

Oh, I thought I read a thread a while back as to the contrary.
I happened to take a look at the front-driver's rim and happened to notice a line of adhesive stuff in front of a line of inside tire weights where it looked like a weight or two popped off.
She still tracks down the road with no problem at 80 - 90 mph like a new L.
We've been in TX. over a year with the L and it's never drank gas like this.
Thanks ya'll...

In my old white 2000 I actually got a tank in the 9.xx MPG range. That thing got the worst mileage. If I got 225 miles on a tank I was grateful. It only had a chip n filter.
In the 01 I have way more mods and I usually get 275 miles per tank which puts me at about 12mpg or so.
You never know with these trucks...

This is about as basic as it gets but have you checked your tire pressure lately? Low tire pressure will affect your mpg.

All i have to say about gas milage is...... Screw it. I have yet to see what my gas milage is. Im afraid to. I drive out to Dallas/garland/carrolton few times a week to hang out with friends then drive back home, out to burleson every day for work, and I plan on making more road trips this summer in the L.
Owell i enjoy every minute of this truck :d :burnout:

Dude, it's my fault... remember letting me drive yer truck the other day?? Yeah, my foot is substantially heavier than yours. :evil
I find it odd, becuse I've got an '01 with almost 40K on it, and on my last tank I got 14.5 mpg, and this is after a spin at Speedworks dyno'n it, romping on it with Ronald holding on for dear life in the passenger seat and looking like he's gonna :vomit: , and I use Sam's Club gas, so go figure.
I'd think you'd get much better, especially the way you drive... mebbe you need to let go and get a bit more -ahem- "assertive" in your driving... who knows, it might respond. :D

I spent a while downstairs looking around the truck and found some of my gas fill up numbers recently:
4/11/04
18.96 gal.
246.9 miles
$1.89/gal.
$36.00 fill up
13.02 mpg
4/16/04
20.738 gal.
263.3 miles
$1.92/gal.
$40.00 fill up
12.69 mpg
I haven't driven any different really (highway/city) and I've been running 32/32 psi front-rear on the new Toyos. Within the last week, I've been running 36/32 psi front-rear since I notice my last set of front F1s were wearing the outside edges a bit - and I take corners fairly easy.
I noticed this afternoon that the fuel gauge was close to 3/4 tank and approx. 75 miles on the odometer, so that's about where I used to be mpg wise.
I almost want to run out this tank of 93 on a highway trip and fish at the parents' place in OK. for the afternoon to see the highway numbers.

$1.93/gal of 93 (Mobil - down the street here in Frisco)
21.66 gallons
11.14 mpg ?
It just seems that with the same basic driving style, mpg. keeps going downhill FAST while filling up at different Shell/Mobil stations on 93 around the Frisco/Plano/The Colony area.
I hardly ever run the A/C, running 36/32 psi front-back, and never haul/tow anything.
Doug, can your Scan-Tool see if something on the L is out of whack or not ?

Ronald,
I realize that the price of gas is high, and money may be short. But I have only checked my MPG once since I have owned the L, and that was just a curiosity to see what my highway mileage would be to Austin. If you need mpg's then drive something else. Nothing else will be as fun, but it will drop your stress level on this issue..
Or just dont measure it, fill it up when it needs more gas and be happy with what you drive is an American classic.. :nana2

Hey, why dont you go dyno the thing, and see if your A/F is out of whack?? If so, perhaps the computer needs reflashing with a slightly less-conservative program (which I'm sure Ford will be HAPPY to do, if you approach it right).
I'm not exactly sure *why* I get such relatively good milage, I sure as hell dont baby it (as well you know--I've *almost* got your puke out of the dash!! ), but I"m not WOT on it all the time, either. You should be getting at least equal to waht I'm getting, especially the way you baby that thang.

No, I don't have any plans of letting it go, at all. I don't regret buying the L in the least.
It's just that I keep records of little things like this and just happened to notice a pretty good hit lately on mpg. I'm just wondering why. I've been wanting to get it dyno-ed to see what #s are produced and see other #s, as well. A/F being one of them, now.
The more constructive comments are always appreciated. Thanks. :tu:

Hey, yer a n00b, and as such, n00bs get teased.. so gut it up, 'til you outgrow yer n00b status... knana
Of course, one of the things that have changed is the weather... have you tried any gas besides Shell/Texaco? Go toss a tank of Chevron in, or (gasp!) Sam's... and if that doesn't work, toss some octane boost and see what that does for you.
And it would be a nice idea to toss that recording the MPG idea.. it will drive you NUTS... ;) Oh, wiat.. you're already THERE... :evil

Ronald Ronald, I got 325 miles out of my last tank. think it ended up being 14.5 mpg. There was a lot of hi-way driving, since I filled it up in Muenster, Tx. but the hi-way driving was mostly at about 90 mph, other than a stertch through Denton. You should be getting better than what your getting. maybe you have too much Zaino on it, and it's making it heavy!

Relax man, nothing wrong with a little ribbing between truck owners.
I will tell you the real reason why you are getting bad gas mileage, I dont think anyone has hit it yet.... You have a supercharged V8 putting out 380hp in a 5000 pound truck.
I checked my gas mileage last night. 11.86mpg. Good stuff!
BTW, speaking of ribbing... you are lucky I missed your post about you being in some special percentile... if you know what I mean.

Yeah, you just can't sweat the small stuff... and milage is one of them. In your shoes, if I got a job that required a significant commute, I'd get something like an SVT Focus for the commute, and garage/play with the L (kinda my plan if I get a job that's over 20 miles one-way).
