I installed my oil seperator last night and drove the truck about 50 miles today. Everything was fine til I stood on it hard (wanted to see how the thing would run in the cooler weather). Went through 1st and 2nd gear, then let off and hit the brakes...obviously under heavy decel, and a high vacuum signal in the manifold. Well, the Check Engine light goes on.
I get home and check it with my code scanner and it showed P0402...EGR flow high. Not sure if this is normal or not with an oil separator, but I pulled it off.
BTW... not a drop of oil or hint of any inside the canister.
I will probably just install a sprinkler head screen/filter like Mark did. That's a great idea, I think.

Just for conversation sake, what scanner do you use/recommend?

Del,
I just have an old Actron code scanner for OBD-II vehicles. It's just a generic code scanner...doesn't do anything but read the codes and allows you to erase them.
As far as a real diagnostic scan tool, I do not have one for Ford-specific vehicles yet. I do have one for my '02 Z06 and I prefer the EASE software. Autotap is also good. I've used that before as well. I assume both these are offered for Fords.

So you have a Tech2? Thats the only True scanner for any gm car. Damn things are 3grand and always have software upgrades for them.
I also have a Actron code scanner at work. Comes in real handy.

No, I don't have a Tech2. I've considered getting one...let me ask you, since you'll know... will a Tech2 work on Ford _and_ GM vehicles?
I have EASE and it works fine for the parameters I need to datalog in real time. Obviously its limited, so if you try and datalog 50 parameters at once, its slow and not accurate _enough_. But I've tuned a number of GM cars with LS1edit and the EASE (or Autotap) scan tools are adequate enough, although not perfect.

As far as i know the Tech2 wont work on Ford, only GM cars. Its a real nice scan tool. They have software upgrades for them atleast once a year. I havent found anything it cant do yet.
The Tech2 also has an adapter that will let you plug it into obdI as well as obdII

Figured out the problem with my oil separator. The plastic drain plug that comes with the unit had a small crack in it, and thus there was a hole in it as well. This allowed lots of unmetered air into the system under heavy vacuum (decel) conditions. I got me a brass 1/8" NPT plug, and it works perfectly now.
Not sure why the put a plastic plug into a brass fitting in the first place, but I got the problem resolved.
And sure enough after a day of driving, I've got a little oil in th bottom of the reservoir.

Thanks ......
