If Norton finds threats but the delete fails what is the next course of action?

If the delete fails it will still quaratine the virus. It happens a lot, sooner or later it will be updated and will allow the virus to be delete. It's fine as long as it sends them to quarantine, they pose no threat to your system.

Go track down McAffee's Stinger (http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger) and run that. If that fails, write down exactly which file(s) was the failure, and where they are located. Also, make sure NOrton is updated, then rerun it as well, noting files and locations if removal fails. Then get in there with Windows Explorer and remove them manually.
I prefer to run AntiVir (www.free-av.com (http://www.free-av.com)), it's good, works as well as the big boys' product, and is free. I also run Stinger when I do my full scans (about monthly), and I use Spybot: Search and Destroy (www.safer-networking.org/ (http://www.safer-networking.org/)) to block malware and spyware. Then, atop of that, I use the Google TOolbar (http://toolbar.google.com/) to bock popups (EXCEPTIONALLY good at this!)This combo is a very good one, and with weekly scans, your AV scan set to "Scan All Files" and check for updates at least weekly, then you should be fine.

Not always: I had a trojan hammer its way thru McAffee in about 60 seconds thru a banner ad on a webpage; once installed, I could NOT rip out the archive it dropped into the Java setup, unless I found it manually and ripped it out.

I went out to a PS2 site yesterday to find some cheat codes and was immediately bombarded by malicious code. Norton tryed to pick it up but was unable to quarantine them all.
This code installed all types of search assistants, toolbars, adware and the like.
I have Spybot and it identified a bunch adware type programs and I was able to clear up most. Norton identified 66 issues this morning and was only able to delete half of them. I was unable to quarantine the others as I could only "exclude" or "skip" as my options- I chose skip at this point.
The people that write such freaking code  should be taken out and flogged as this has cost many hours of trying to clean up this crap:flaming:
