For the past 15 years I've carried my homeowner's and auto insurance with USAA. They've always been good to deal with, and occasional rate checks indicated that no one could touch their rates. Well, all that's changed now. I saw an article in the paper a few weeks ago indicating that USAA was moving all their Casualty Insurance customers in Texas to their County Mutual. My auto renewal arrived the other day, and it shows a substantial rate increase, to the tune of almost $500 per year for our two vehicles. I called Progressive, and they gave me a quote that's almost $500 less per year for virtually identical coverage. I called USAA, and told them if the renewal premium was the best they could do they were about to lose my business. They politely told me to take a hike. Haven't checked with any other insurance companies yet. Anyone use Progressive? How's the service? Other companies that you would or wouldn't recommend? TIA.

15 years, LOL! No comment. I bet Sixer can beat that..;)
I use Aetna and with the home/ 2 autos and all the discounts I could find they are the lowest for me. Naitionwide was a close 2nd. I would try those two A+ rated companies. The breaks I got were: Household and auto policy combination, factory alarm (none for aftermarket), garaged, pleasure or secondary use, new vehicle, multiple vehicles, no claims...

I've been using Farmer's Insurance for a while now. A few months Farmers quit writing insurance and they tried to move me to Texas County Mutual...which was the best I could get after the wife had an accident a few years ago. I think they realized they would lose business by doing that so they moved me to Mid-Century. Which was cheaper than my original policy. Texas County Mutual is for people with a bad driving record or claims. I also read an article about the changes in home owners coverage and how it's not a good idea to try and look for another company to be with. Something about how all insurance companies(in Tx) are not going to be rewriting their policies until the underwriting excludes mold, termites and a few other things. The insurance analysts also predicted rate hikes in all the companies for that same reason(mold claims) but predict that rates will eventually fall once everyone has their underwriting set and competition begins

I have been with USAA over 8 years. My rates went up 200.00 per year. Moonshine, what is this about? The big Texas Flood down in San Antonio? USAA service is next to none, regardless. Thanks! John

You might want to give NationWide a shot. I have tried quite a few different carriers and NationWide has beat them all hands down. This is with multi car, house, umbrella, RV, and I have twin teenagers on my policies. E-mail me if you want my agents name.
For what is is worth I have been told rates are going up across the board for all companies. Nationwide is writting homewoners and giving the policy holder 4 options on mold coverage.

L8,
Yes, some of us have been driving since you were but a gleam in your Daddy's eye.

MadMax,
I'm not sure what the deal is, but I have a guess. The real USAA has always been exclusively for US military Officers and retired Officers. They have the best rates, most satisfied customes, and lowest claims of any insurance company out there. About 15-17 years ago USAA formed a subsidiary, USAA Casualty Insurance Company (CIC), and they opened it to US military Officer dependants and former dependants of Officers (like me). The rates were never quite as good as the real USAA, but they were substantially better than any other insurance you could find, because, as a group, CIC customers still had very low claim rates. About 3 years ago, they started allowing current and former military enlisted to join CIC. Now they're creating another subsidiary, County Mutual, and all Texas CIC customers are being moved to the Couty Mutual. Their explanation is that in Texas CIC claims have exceeded CIC premiums. My guess is that, as a group, Texas military enlisted personnel have a much higher rate of claims than the "traditional" CIC customer, and the creation of the County Mutual is to keep Texas profitable.

Jon,
You have mail (PM).

I've had insurance with progressive for about 4 years with progressive and I'm very happy with them they have great service
one time I was hit from behind on I35 when they had the construction arround george's turn pike, but any way I called them and made a claim and told them that i was going on vacation in a week, and supricelly after 30 min I had an adjuster at my door writing a check four about 5,000. they said that they would collect from the other insurance later.

Make that 635, and you've got my little fender bender of a month ago. However, please note that Progressive is no longer filing on behalf of their customers. They no longer feel it their responsibility to do so. Of course, the punk that hit me wasn't insured, so all was for naught.

Good luck with the insurance hunting. It has definitely become the supreme scam on the general public.

Like most the insurance this year it went up! Farmers sent us a notice on our house 1700.00 . After asking and pursuing got it down to 1100.00. But our car and truck is on our home owners. I pay about 54 bucks a mounth on my 2001 and my wife pays about 45 a mounth. Its best to keep it on your homeowners or change companies, you can always find it cheaper else where. Good luck Brian!

Man Brian I don't know if I've been paying too much or getting a good deal since I've read this tread. I have State Farm Insurance, and have had them for about sixteen years now. I have my 2001 L and my 2001 compact, plus my new Home and pay about 1500.00 a year for full coverage. I did not choose to take that new mold insurance that would have jacked up my homeowners insurance by about 500.00 a year. I have had two vehicles totaled out by drunk drivers, one truck stolen, and multiple break in's at the Parkland garage at night when I was at work. My insurance hasn't gone up YET.. I hope you get something worked out soon..

Well, now you guys are starting to make me think I shouldn't be griping, because that's just about what mine would be with the increase. And I haven't been able to find any reputable company that's any cheaper.
