RALLY POINT OUTSIDE OF TOPEKA: TBD. There may be a need to set up a rally point outside of Topeka where we can all meet up to roll into Topeka together. We are likely going to be filmed coming into the hotel, so we need to be in a tght convoy heading in. I have asked locals for someplace we could use along our route that is just outside of Topeka, and will provide info when I have it.

OTHER NOTES: With a convoy of this size and this well advertised, we will have to keep things civil along the way. Keep this in mind while we are driving. Gas stops will be coordinated via radio, since the majority of us will need to stop at roughly the same intervals. Others may need to stop more frequently, so the thought is to let them stop and keep the convoy moving. They can try to catch up or meet at the rally point listed above. We can change this as necessary.

Rob needs all the beauty sleep he can get, I agree

Jacob does'nt get off untill 12:00, call in a bomb threat or call in sick

Adam said you probably would'nt be able to keep up, what a wuss

and Steve said he cant leave that early because his medication does'nt kick in until about noonish.:evil :evil So that explains it

I have to go with them because they need some adult supervision.knana I see

On of the next things we may need to resolve is the time of departure. Last year we left about 10-ish or so from Denton. We may elect to go a little later to make a massive convoy from these parts. That is still all TBD.

At this point, both Aggie Mom and myself (wife included) are all going. Mom has the time off already, and I should be able to leave on Thursday also....
Now we just have to see if Mom can keep up???:D

And she might need some encouragement to race her truck also. Adam was witness to the psudo-challenge that was proposed to her (heads up race between mother and son)...

I like the way it was last year they left the Denton IHOP about 10AM. Everyone should be able to plan around work with this much notice. Just smack the boss and be there! Is the dinner Friday or Thursday this year? I believe activities start Friday this year so everyone needs to go up Thursday, why miss a day of L Fest? Which hotel is everyone tearing up?

We'll do our best to attend. Last year was a blast! :nana2

The schedule of events is on the registration page: http://www.lightningfest2004.com/register.php .

I figure Thursday night will be drinking and partying in someone's room, Friday night is the BBQ, then drinking and partying in someone's room. Saturday night there is grudge drags at the track and then drinking and partying in someone's room. We'll probably toss a group dinner in there for good measure. I think we'll find something to do while we're there!!

I'll update all of the logistics on this forum and on the NLOC forum as the time draws nearer and the decisions are made. Doug hit it right on the head in that we'll probably just do like we did last year and meet in Denton TX in the late morning and head out from there.

Keep watching for details.

I'm making an executive decision related to the convoy meeting place based on the changing needs of the convoy arrangements. From the info I've gathered from various comments and whatnot, a big breakfast with the whole convoy group will be a disaster. Therefore two things...

1) You're on your own for breakfast. Eat whereever suits you best. I'm sure there will be small groups that get together for breakfast, but there will be no one spot for everyone

2) Be at the meeting place gassed up and ready to go by the leaving time. We will leave no later than that time, and we will not be waiting for anyone.

With that being said, the most logical place for us to meet that will have enough concrete to hold the number of trucks we are looking to get is the Love's truck stop. Like it or not, we'll have plenty of space there to organize. A map will be provided in the post at the top of this forum. Here we can socialize and do whatever prior to getting on the road.

We have a commitment to arrive at the hotel around 5:30pm, as we are set to be filmed coming in for the local news. Since this is well advertised concerning timing and route, we will have to keep this thing very civilized so we don't make some highway patrolman's ticket quota for the next year (chances are if one of us is screwing around, all of us will be pulled over...not good). We've got 500 miles to cover, which will be a little over 6 hours of driving if we maintain about 80MPH. I propose we leave right at 9:00am-9:30am. That would put us there at around 4:00pm with minimal stops, but we know gas stops will be lengthy, so we'll have slack time built in. There really is no need to keep the entire group together on this thing...drive at your own pace and don't mangle traffic trying to get past that semi the guy in front of you just passed. We're individual vehilces on the road...let's act like it.

Also, concerning gas stops...some of us might have to stop more often than others. I suggest we keep rolling and allow those that need to gas up more do so. We will have a meeting place set up outside of Topeka where all of the people in the convoy can come back together before running in. That was these persons that need to gas up more often can either attempt to cathc up to the rest of the group or just meet at this "staging" spot. That place is still TBD.

Comments? I update this info on all of the forums by the end of the week if there are no objections.

Please try to get a set of FRS radios for the convoy so that you can keep in touch with everyone else. This is how we coordinate gas stops and everything amongst ourselves. Make sure you get radios with channels and subchannels, as we will be using channel 5, subchannel 4 on this trip. Think of those Motorola Talkabout radios, and this is what I am referring to:

Leaving from the Waffle House at I35W and Western Center in Fort Worth (3020 Western Center Boulevard) @11am sharp

RALLY POINT OUTSIDE OF TOPEKA: Emporia - MP 132 (last one before Topeka)
The Emporia Service Area offers a Phillips 66 and McDonald's. It has a children's play area and adult exercise area outside to allow travelers a chance to stretch. This is the last point where we can stop before Topeka, so we will rally here and head into Topeka thereafter. My best guess is we will leave this rally point at 4:30 or so.

TRUCKS JOINING THE CONVOY ALONG THE WAYThose of you that are going to meet up with the convoy along the way (OKC, Wichita, etc), please provide contact info so I can provide updates as to when we ill be passing you. Please be sure to be waiting on or near the highway...we are not going to stop, you're just going to have to be ready for us to come through, but I want to give you the best info I can to get you into the convoy. I can be reached at tliss@comcast.net (tliss@comcast.net). Please e-mail me with questions.

TIMING MILESTONES: Here is an estimate of when we will be coming through various milestones

9:30am - departure from Love's Truck Stop
9:50-10:00am - Red River (Texas/Oklahoma border) - ~32 miles
10:15-10:30am - Ardmore, OK - ~33 miles
11:30-11:45am - Norman, OK - ~82 miles
11:45-12:00pm - Oklahoma City, OK - ~20 miles
1:30-2:00pm - Kansas/Oklahoma border - ~114 miles
2:15-2:30pm - Wichita, KS - ~55 miles
3:15-3:30pm - Emporia, KS - ~90 miles
4:00-4:30pm - Topeka, KS (rally point) - ~58 miles

We are committed to arriving at the Holiday Inn around 5:30pm to be filmed by local media coming in. This schedule is an estimate and should leave us plenty of slack time to meet this commitment.

Clear as mud? Excellent. Bottom line, be at the Love's in Denton no later than 9:30, cuz that's when we're leaving.

As far as convoy 2, they are leaving from the Waffle House at I35W and Western Center in Fort Worth (3020 Western Center Boulevard) @11am sharp same day.
