Chevrolet Gives 2005 SSR alot of Power & Weight Savings to Compete with Dodge SRT-10 & Ford Lightning Pick Ups.
2005 Chevrolet SSR
A powerful new engine gives SSR eye-popping performance to match it's one of a kind looks.

Same Engine Used in 2005 Corvette

405 lbs. ft. of torque @ 4400 rpm (21% Increase over 2004)
Made of weight savings aluminum
0-60 mph = 5.29 sec.
1/4 mile = 13.86

It should be interesting. The automatic is defenitely the option to choose. At least Chevy is doing that part right.
I do get a kick out of the manufacturers using "sport car engines" to attempt to make their truck line faster.
OK Ford....let's get the 05 Lightning going...time is running out;) .

This is the same motor that's going in the new C6 Vette. It's down 5HP to the new Vette, but that's to be expected. It's probably marketing hype is all.
Anyway, I don't know how much the SSR weighs, but if its a heavy vehicle, then it doesn't stand a chance. That motor makes its peak HP and TQ pretty high in the rev-range if you're trying to move a heavy vehicle from a standstill.
13.8 estimated 1/4 ET isn't bad, but then again the SSR is a tiny "truck", if you can even call it that.
Still, I do give GM some kudos for doing that. The current SSR is a major poser as far as performance goes.
Oh, and yes it is a N/A motor. On my Z06 I had a small shot of nitrous on it for awhile before I went with the twin-turbos. The nitrous boosted it from 365rwhp to 495rwhp, set up very, very conservatively. There are also Eaton blower kits out for these motors (M90, which is smaller than our L blowers) that put out ~460-500rwhp.

That's the point I was trying to make with my "sports car" cmment.
Check this out....The Lightning makes peak Torque of roghly 413 @3600 RPM's
The peak H.P. is roughly 351@ about 5000 RPM's.
These are rear wheel numbers I got from my L when it was stock.
The biggest hinderence is going to be in the torque number....with a heavy arse truck...you need torque down low to get it moving....

Peak torque @ 4400? The L guys have no need to worry.

The current SSR is definitely a poser...a la Prowler,Rumble Bee,Boss 5.4 etc.....

Yep, I figured we were on the same page with regards to this.
FWIW, when my Z06 was stock w/ 800 miles on it, it made 350rwhp @ 6000rpm and 347rwtq @ 4800rpm. $300 in mods will give you another 20rwhp/10rwtq. The LS2 engine in the SSR will be about the same, although maybe cammed a bit differently to bring the peak TQ on a bit sooner. I can tell you that the TQ curve out of the motor is very, very flat compared to most typical pushrod engines. It is over 300rwtq from 2400-redline, which is pretty good for a relatively high-revving, hydraulic roller pushrod engine (redline is 6500) with only 346cubes.
What does the SSR weigh? I think that is a pretty critical component in the equation. I don't think a manufacturer's estimate of 13.8 is going to scare anyone around here, however. :)

One more item.. The SSR was pretty expensive if I remember right.. I was thinking it was more than 40k since it is a hard top convertible. It is definitely a truck in name only, since it cant tow or haul much. Plus its really an S10 so its not exactly big inside the cabin..
As I still say, there is nothing like a Lightning. It is truly unique in what it can do.

I do believe you're correct, cool breeze;) . I thought 6050# sounded a lil' high. I think "curb" weight, is the number we're looking for here. I wanna say I heard they weighed pretty darn close to that of a Gen 2 L, which would explain why they're not too particularly quick.

From the Chevrolet website:
http://www.chevrolet.com/ssr/specs.htm
Weighs in at about the same as the L's 4760lbs (est.) with 10hp more should be close to the stock L's if they can get the torque down low enough to launch it.
They say nothing about payload capacity on the website that I could find.

Terry is right... GVWR is payload + curb weight. the '03-04 L is at 6050#s. I know this b/c I needed a truck that was over 6000# GVWR to get the tax write-off. I triple-checked this figure.
I'm surprised the SSR is 4700+lbs, but that's too bad for GM.

One of our club members recently bought one. 48K
I would imagine the 05 model should hit the 50K range.

Ron , your truck looks good. I guess the Saleen stripes on the door and the wing on the bedcover set it off for me. Been intending to let you know for awhile. That is the bedcover I've been wanting for past 1 1/2 years now, but it wasn't out when I put my Snugtop on 3 years ago and I'm not to thrilled to plop down another grand to change to that one yet.
