How can I tell if my motherboard is compatible? It's currently a P4 1.8 ghz.
Is it a Northwood or Prescott?

Is it a Northwood or Prescott? You would have to check with your Motherboard vendor ... or check online...

I've returned opened things to Fry's with no problem. They are good if you know what you want. If you have to ask anybody a question, forget it.

They used to be hard asses on it and charge restock fees..
It was my mistake - But you are right the commision sales people are clueless.
I know very little about hardware - especially processor and motherboard upgrades but I felt like I could easily outperform them....
He asks " are you sure this processor will work " -
I answer - "Dells support forums say it will"
He says - " i dont think anything beyond a 2.4 will work - "
I say " Can we check to see if it will work ? "
He says - " NO - no where to checkl - that PC is too old - buy a new one"
I say "you are going to buy it for me ??""
What a jerk....

Sort of off-topic here, but I wanted to post-up on this subject.
I've run across a couple of really good sites for PC builds:
http://www.pimprig.com
http://www.frozencpu.com
I've looking to build up a monster sometime soon like this with all the neon action going on and give my current PC to my parents:
http://www.frozencpu.com/images/products/detail_hires/cas-187.jpg
I'm debating back-and-forth on whether going the water-cooled route. Opinions/experiences?
And those 16:9 aspect LCD/plasma monitors! :bows I'm partial to Sony, IMO.

Well, the key words were "looking to" and "soon".
I'm doing my homework first before I "pull the trigger" and build.

Unless you are a rabid overclocker, why go water cooled? Processors are so cheap now it doesn't seem worth the bother.

I bought my first off the shelf Dell for my spouse a couple of months ago and am very impressed with the quality/performance for the price.

True, the whole overclocking thing is a bit over my head at this point.
Keeping it simple at this point, and then go "apey" down the road.

Why not pony up and get some more memory??? Doesn't matter what your processor is when your running slow because IE is eating up your 256M of resources.

I was so busy http://www.talonclub.com/forum/images/smilies/ronald.gifing that I forgot to say bump the memory up to a min of 512. It will take the strain off of the drive and the processor and is worth the small investment.

When I build a machine I usually just go straight to newegg.com. Their prices are some of the best on the internet and their return process is simple. It is alot easier when you buy all the stuff from one place if you need to return something.
One big advantage you have in buying a Dell or Compaq prebuilt over building yourself is warranty. If your Dell breaks its pretty easy to take care of. If your pieced out computer breaks down you have to diagnose the problem and deal with the replacement of whatever parts might be broken with which ever vendor you bought the part from. For me thats not a problem but for most users it is.
I am a huge fan of the AMD Athlon stuff, since my last machine its the ONLY way I would go. The price/performance is still much better than Intel gear.
This Christmas my machine will be three years old. AMD Athlon XP 1600+. Its time for some serious upgrading baby!!!

Ive looked at the comparison
Unless you like driving back and forth to the store and your time is worth nothing AND you are installing Linux or stealing Windows you CANT build a PC for the prices and performance that you can buy one...
Even if the hardware costs and pwerformance were the same - Which they arent - THe software is the kicker $200 for windows XP pro - Plus the little stuff that adds up - the CD buring software etc etc etc
I have a Gig of ram in my desktop and that will be the minimum for any PC in the future - its too cheap and makes too BIG a difference to skimp
The one thing that makes the PC SEEM fast is the ram

You guys have clearly never negotiated with MS...
Academic Edition Full Packaged Product (FPP)
Our most popular retail products are available as Academic Edition Full Packaged Product (FPP). These boxed products include same great software as the regular retail versions at special discounted prices of up to 70% off. Academic Edition FPP is available through any Microsoft Authorized Educational Reseller (AER). Most college campus bookstores are AERs and offer these products in their retail stores or at their online retail site.

One of the IT guys at work is a student at UTA and he got me a copy of Office XP for $10. It comes in a sleeve with the discs and no documentation. Believe it or not, MS provides the colleges with some unbelievable discounts.

Amd has no over heat controls --- Which is ironic since people like over clocking them

I bought my first off the shelf Dell and am very impressed with the quality/performance for the price.Same here. I've never had a Dell before, but I won a P4/2.8MHz/800FSB/DVD/CDRW off of Ebay for $407 + shipping. I upgraded to 1G of memory and this thing is simply amazing. Not a glitch anywhere. Also managed to install XP Pro in 9 minutes flat! On my previous P3, it took about half an hour. So far, I love it!

Ditto2, I bought my Dell (Dimension XPC, same specs as yours) last year, and it has been the most reliable and rock-solid machine I have ever seen. And the 17" LCD flat-panel is spectacular. Even the little H-K 3-pc sound is good. :tu:

This was mentioned awhile ago in the thread, but I built my computer about 6 months ago and I overclock it all the time. I have a Koolance water cooled case that runs about 78-80 degrees all the time. If I leave it on for days or hours same temp.

Nice setup... Koolance's are some of the best watercooling solutions out there, especially for overclocking.
Did you hit QuakeCon a couple weeks ago?
