View Full Version : Sixpipes, about the Fall Classic

I e-mailed Shelley at the Hallsville track and was getting some feedback on having the Fall Classic again this year. This is what she said:

Justin,

We don't have anything scheduled for December as of yet. Last year we were mainly running TNT, Trophy Street & Jackpot thru the winter months. We will be running Saturday & Sunday during the days December thru February. So either of the two weekend would be just fine. Let me make a suggestion though. I would suggest scheduling it for the 1st Saturday (Dec. 4th) with Dec. 11 as a pre-scheduled rainout/bad weather date. The winter months are so unpredictable and there is usually quite a bit of rain. This way there would already be a rain date scheduled so the guys would know in advance and could be prepared, just in case. We run from noon to 5:00 during the winter.

Just let me know what date you prefer so I can get it on the schedule.

We look forward to having you all with us again.

Shelley

Justin,

Per our conversation at Lightningfest. I think we should pool our resources and schedule the TALON Fall Classic for December 4th with a rainout date of December 11th. That gives us two months to promote and get organized. I like the winner/consolation bracket format and maybe we could throw a heads-up class with a cash prize to draw some of the faster guys to the event.

I'm thinking the cost will be $15 for the track fee and $20 to race with $5 of the $20 going to the heads-up prize. 20 entries would result in a $100 cash prize which would at least pay for the trip. I am also thinking about early registration in an effort to better guage the expected participation level.

If we only have one event this fall, we should be able to get better participation. Any suggestions by you folks out there to help get this thing off of the ground would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds good to me. I can tell Shelley to schedule us in on those dates. And I assume the club will take care of the trophies again rather then the track. It has worked everytime with us so far.

Are we going to run the winner/looser bracket again this year. I didn't like it last year because we only had like 9-10 trucks in it and it was screwy. It might work better with a lot more trucks. My opinion, I like the straight out bracket racing myself w/ 1st round buy backs.

Lets get this going where we can start advertising this. I would like this one to be the best and biggest one yet. There should be no reason not to have 40 Lightnings racing. I don't think we have had no more then 24-25 at one time. Doug was telling me last weekend that TALON has a lot more participants this year and the site has been really busy with new members.

Lets get going,
Justin

I think that we should all act like complete A$$holes to anyone that doesn't come out and race this year.

I want it to be known that I for one look down upon the weenies that want to "play" lightning as long as it involves food and a beer, but run like cowards when it comes time to put it on the track.

Another thing is that we should not be expecting the HALO group this year if anyone is looking forward for them to come back. I would like them to come, but their Club Christmas party is the 11th. However there will be probably a handful to come up and race with us.

That is why I threw an event together last year in Oct. for the HALO and TALON guys to meet together.
Just a little FYI

I would like to see the Halo guys there. Why does the event have to be in December??????? So close to christmas may be the real reason we have such a crappy turn out.

I thought we were going to try the other track .. In Rusk ??

Sixpipes
09-30-2004, 06:12 PM
I think Rusk is a great track and it was run very well when the TMCC event was held there earilier this month. Hallsville has the reputation of being a "fast track" so that would probably be better attended. If it was me, personally, I would rather do Rusk. It is a lot closer to Houston, but since not many of the Halo guys race with us, it really doesn't matter to me.

Not all of us have the unlimited budget to race like you seem to have....  . Dont take this as me trying to start something, just seems you like to pick on the ones that dont race at every event like you do....

Ill be there but wont race, bracket racing just isnt for me... The street race style racing (at the track of course)/instant green is more fun to me. That being the reason i dont race at many events because its all bracket racing....

Early next year could be a possibility. I've thought that maybe we would get a better draw if we planned a February event instead of last-event-of-the-year type thing. Rusk would come into to play if we could get better participation from Halo.

Dont want to speak for Ron BUT

I think a big problem is that we have 600+ members and barely 30 made it to the national event.

The TALON races are the easiest lowest key races you can find .. Cheap to enter - Lots of fun to race - And the classes are set up that the beginners are all in the same class.

Many tracks dont do instant green racing because many folks go to the track to practice launches..

The important thing is Step 1 - to show up - Step 2 join one ofthe racing classes and learn from your fellow members how to do it

Ill be there no matter what, if i race is one thing..... I will say i havent fully learned all the ways of bracket racing but so far it seems kinda boring to me.. But if i race all depends on if i have paid my tickets (due in dec) and have gotten/paid for my slicks....

Instant green starts aren't gonna matter when I leave a half second earlier than you do.....:evil (let the flame wars begin)

Bracket racing is boring while waiting to race, but it's fun when you lauch a perfect light and run a good close dial in, and you know there is no way the other guy can win.

Dennis,

there is no problem with hallsville as the track, its just december is a hard month for most of the halo group to do anything.. If we did an early next year event, we would have lots of time to help hype up, and get the halo club involved... could be a really really really good race day:)

I like the idea of instant green racing as well, make it interesting :)

How about an event in San Antonio for the Talon vs Halo wars in Jan or Feb?.

03LightningRocks
09-30-2004, 11:25 PM
Mike..........I was just cutting up a bit, similar to what you are doing when you make a post about being faster than someone else. Doug pretty much sad what inspired my post.

****Edited to keep this thread from getting out of wack. If you are subscribed to this thread you know what I had to say. Otherwise....sorry about getting off topic****

Now for the other comment about bracket racing. In a heads up race, the man with the biggest wallet, does win. Speed takes money. On an instant green, you would be out the first round if it is me or one of the others here with 11 second trucks. In a bracket race.....you very well could put me on the trailer the first round. I have to give you a head start and then manage to get ahead of you without running to fast.

Fo the deal with HALO................I would reall enjoy working out our big event to allow our HALO brothers to attend. I hope we give it some serious thought, even if it means doing the event after the first of the year.

December is a tough month for about everyone anyway. I really do believe the attendence would be more if we tried this after everyone recovers from Christmas some.

Janruary or February would be beter than Dec. for most. As far as cold weather, the trucks make more power and run quicker in the cold, just need a well prepped track.

Also, if you want to increase HALO participation, somewhere closer to Houston (between Houston and D/FW) would be a big help to increasing numbers. That also might help bring out Waco and Austin/San Antonio L's. While Shane and I have family and friends near Hallsville, many do not.

Bracket race will get the most entries. If you want heads up racing, suggest brackets, i.e. 11.00-11.99,12.00-12.99,13.00-13.99, 14.0-14.99. This takes care of those who prefer bracket racing and those who want heads-up racing.

OK. The TALON Fall Classic will be December 4 with the rainout date set for December 11. This will be a club event as the two previous years have been. Format will be bracket racing with drivers to determine their own dial-in. One bracket only with first round by-backs. If there is interest in heads-up racing, we can provide cash ($5/entry towards the heads-up class) plus all by-back money. We'll see how it goes.

In February, we will try to coordinate with the Houston guys in an effort to co-host the biggest baddest Texas Lightning Shootout ever held in the state (including FFW). Ideally, this should be held at Cherokee County Raceway (Rusk, TX) to allow a more central location for Austin and San Antonio area Lightning owners to attend.

That's the plan.

That sounds good to me. I will double check to see if Shelley will let us have the first round buyback money to go towards our payout.

Justin, the first time we did buy-back money, they let us keep it, but we gave it to them for helping us put on the event. Doesn't really matter to me, but if they let the club have the money, the heads up guys should get it IMO.

Yeah, but I just e-mailed Shelley anyways and ask her. I just feel better asking if they would let us keep it for the club.

Last year in Oct. they let me keep the buybacks and luckily that helped me brake even on the trophies. They are very nice people and I am sure that they won't mind, but I just like to ask anyways rather then assume.

well I will be at the fall classic regardless, and I think more halo guys would be willing to come out as well.. however I need help...

come over to the halo board, kick our shins a bit, get their team spirit up... the fall classic sounds fun as heck :)

as far as the all texas shootout, that sounds great as well, and I will be there for sure! :)

Although I have not been to the Hallsville track, those that I know that came back from there last year said the track prep was non-existant and the traction was lousy. I have heard nothing but good things about the track at Seguin which is the new 1/4 track. I think that would be a better choice rather than Hallsville.

My truck is under rebuild with a new motor and new rebuilt tranny sitting on the floor. Just need to turn some wrenches. Beware, it was built for bracket racing not speed. :D:D:D:D:D:D

Prices on trophies last year were competitive with other shops so no complaints here. Since the turnout was low last year, I think we should try the standard bracket racing format with first round buy-backs. I would really like a heads up race bracket with $100 to the winner, but we may not have enough participationto make that feasible.
