I understand alot has changed since 9/11 with the Border Patrol regarding citizens passing back-and-forth across the Rio-Grande.
I understand you don't want to do ANYTHING to jack with the "policia" down there. Also, I understand the "coppers" actually CHARGE you for directions - this from a former co-worker who visited.
Thanks,
Reynaldo y Laney

I don't think the border entry is that much tougher than before 9/11. I assume you are driving over, right? Just make sure and have a copy of your birth certificate and your driver's license, and don't ever say Reynaldo y Laney ever again, and I am sure you will be fine.
Oh, and carry enough cash to bribe the police if they decide to pull you over. My sister and her new husband were nearly arrested in Cozumel because they weren't wearing a helmet while riding a scooter last month.

I thought the same thing, Garett. But, my cousin and his wife (pre 9/11) went down there on a road-trip and had some local actually ROW them across the Rio Grande) with no papers/etc. Just cash on the barrel-head.
No driving for us in Mexico!

No driving for us in Mexico!Just an observation, and I'd like to qualify this by saying that I don't know them, but your cousin and his wife must be total idiots. Their last name wouldn't happen to be Griswold would it?

Being careful in ANY foreign country is important, and Mexico is no exception. If you go to resorts or resort towns, you're mostly safe because tourism is important and the cops will do everything they can to keep it that way; however, if you get outside those little bubbles, you're taking your life into your hands becasue "rule of law" isn't much more than a suggestion down there. :rolleyes"

My wife's friend's husband worked for Phillips Petroleum, and was sent down there to work out a pipeline deal with Pemex and another Mexican company, for water and natural gas lines. They were given an apartment (more like penthouse) in the American section of Mexico City, a maid, a driver, and a car. The car was as low-rent as they could get without actually getting a beater, because carjackings are not only frequent, they are frequently violent and usually fatal. They were also told to stick to the American section (in the neighborhood of the American Embassy), and to NEVER leave it without an armed guard and a group with a guide. Mike also made sure he was paid in dollars, and the money deposited in an American bank.
Six months into the assignment, Mike seny Mary home to Dallas because the kidnappings and violence were heating up, and Pemex/other company were reneging on their contracts to Phillips (after millions of dollars of product was delivered and installed, and millions of dollars in "facilitation fees" (aka "bribes) were paid), and some information came back to them thta some of the "random street violence" was traced back to the "negotiation difficulties". Three months later, he came back against company orders, because he felt his life was in danger.
Needless to say, to this day Phillips has never gotten a dime out of Pemex/Mexico, and they have most of the pipelines they wanted. :nono:[/:ron]
Be careful out there, folks... this li'l bubble we call "America" ain't very big... :tu:

Sixpipes,
Off-topic, the cousin in question is rather...uh... "sophomoric". The funny thing is Laney's unofficially :banned him from our place. :D Long story.
The story was that they road-tripped to Big-Bend years ago and happened upon some local with a row-boat in the middle of no-where on the Rio Grande where the border-crossing rules are more "relaxed". For $1, he rowed them back-and-forth while they goofed around in some no-name town in Mexico.
This is the same cousin that almost killed himself (allergic reaction to native food) in Bangkok, Thailand on 12/31/99 and ,earlier, almost got his a$$ kicked by the Thai locals - turns out they were speaking with very-friendly "working" girls and evidently they didn't know you could ONLY speak with them for ~5 min. before you either had to throw-down or move on.
The girls' 8-10 member Thai "entourage" evidently took a hard-nosed approach to the obtuse traveling gaijins. :D
