Alright, the fire is lit under my @ss to get down there and see what kind of wall-hanger I can take home.knana
One of my contractor buddies at T-Mobile with leases outside of Abilene pick and choose their 10 and 12 pt. bucks based on Boone/Crocket scores. :bows
Time to let us, Suzy and "Ol' Mule" see what kind of "damage" we can inflict down 'yonder. :D
As for this year, opening day for OK./Deer-Rifle is Sat. day break and I'm going to be in the top of my stand on the Grand-Parent's land. :)
This stuff is almost therapeutic. knana
Thanks,
Ronald

If you want to hunt south Texas whitetails be prepared to spend big $$ on a lease, like in the $4-6K range per year, per gun. They've got some magnificant bucks down south, but they are proud of them.

I think I'd rather hunt wild boar for free.

Agreed. Or coyotes. As much as I love to deer hunt it just got too expensive. I haven't had a lease in 5 years. I have a couple of friends that allow me to shoot a doe or cull buck, so I still get some venison each year, but that's the extent of my deer hunting these days. I have found that predator (coyote, bobcat) calling is very challenging, and a number of landowners will invite you to predator hunt their property for free. Most are also thrilled to have you kill a hog if you get the chance.

Brian,
I've heard some of the premium leases are in the several grand range, but my friend's yearly lease is $1K for hunting anything on several thousand acres - that's with a number of other hunters. He says $10 an acre is standard.
Agreed - wild boar hunting is a blast, too! The Grandparents have had herds of them pass through their cattle pastures and it looks as though you'd taken a tandem-disk plow to them. Those hogs can wreck a field.
Bobcats are beautiful animals. Personally, I couldn't bring myself to take one. I had a huge male a few years back walk within 10 foot of my 20 ft. tall stand, stop for a minute or so, look at my tree and raise his head up and look me in the eye for several moments. He knew something wasn't quite "right" and just walked on slowly.
I love being "invisible" out there.

Yeah, I've seen a bunch of leases for $10/acre, but it seems like they really pack the hunters on those. For me, I'm just not interested in anything more than 1 hunter for each 500 acres.

Didn't know we had so many hunta's on here. My neighbor owns a 100+ acre Deer lease with a two story cabin. Its down here NW of SA... He keeps inviting me but I just haven't gone yet. I think he already got two 10 pointers or maybe they were 8?? Regardless how many would be interested in going? He has tons of blinds setup across this massive place.

Hmm... I feel fortunate, I suppose, getting 180 acres+ to myself just on one of the family plots - but I don't pay.
They're there as I see their scrapes/rubs/etc. It's all a matter of timing, as you know.
