Well I have raced a few times now and think I got the butterflies out of stomach and have a little idea of what im doing now... but still very young at this... I think I might have gone down track like 12 times total now....

anyway, I have 26" MT ET tires and I usually get a pretty decent burnout, then I get up in line and rev to about 1100rpms and then just full WOT bunch on 3rd light...

last night I was getting really good RT... every run except one was under 1.0... most were .08, .09

my 60' times have been REAL consisitant, its almost a given that I will run 1.87 or 1.88

is that normal for 3.55 gears and stock tranny/converter? or do I still have room to improve? im not doubting that its user error, I just "feel" like I get really good jumps yet 60' is always the same...

Scott,

What you're going to find, even as you improve your skill on the launch, is that your stock converter will hold you back. Even if it "feels" like its leaving harder, you are limited in how quickly you can get into the better part of the engine's power band. These things make peak TQ ~3000-3200rpm, and an optimum drag racing converter would be ~300-400rpm lower than the peak TQ rpm. What is the stock converter? 14-1500rpm? For the first split second, you're too far below peak TQ. If you put a 2400+rpm stall in there, you'd be in the 1.6s easily, I believe. But I am giving you what I think based on the theory I understand, but not having actually done it in an L.

I'm not saying that guys can't go quicker than 1.8x with the stock converter and 3.55 gears. But you just have to make even that much more power from the engine. An efficient way to accomplish better 60's on slicks is a good TQ converter matched to the engine's powerband.

Yep, a new convertor will get you down there. I was hitting 1.6's and 1.7's at Hallsville with the stock 3.55's in there. Also, better slicks will help you as well, get some 28's, they should help improve your 60' and your ET

I'm about to go to 30's...gonna ditch the 28's so I can run a little quicker

i was just looking, and on my last run....

the other guy ran 7.8 @ 87mph
I ran 8.20 @ 86mph

so my mph is up there, just he had 1.6 and I had 1.9 60'

i wish printer wasnt broken on that first 8.0 run to see my 60' and mph....

i was told by a few different people that 26" slicks is actually perfect for stock 3.55 gears....

how does an aftermarket torque converter effect daily driving, stop & go traffic?
With the few times I visit the track, I'm doubting this as a future mod for my '04.
I'll see if I can get a 1.7 off the hoosiers on my next track outing (SAR 12/22 6pm)

It does at the power level you're at. If you start trapping 115mph, you'll be shifting into OD. The 26" tire makes your 3.55s act like 3.90s or a bit higher. Guys with 3.73s running 26"ers... well, as Chris found out, you shift into OD ~102mph with that combo b/c it makes you run out of gear.

A taller tire will actually give you better traction, if you need it b/c the contact patch is bigger (not width-wise, but length-wise).

I was running 86.5-86.8mph out at Hallsville. Maybe I can rent a pair of 28" slicks from someone for a couple of runs next time I get to the track? :)

I run 3.55s with 26" MT ETs and run 1.70 to 1.79 60 fts, stock converter.

Wesman I might be interested in the 28s.

Ive been running 1.61s at houston raceway park, and I was running 1.63s in hallsville (when I hooked) all with a PI converter that stalls about 2600 or so... all with my stock 3.55s out back. Im running 28 hoosiers, or 30 m&h slicks both give me 1.61s almost every run at houston raceway park... I have pulled a best of 1.58 at HRP with my 28 hoosiers :)

I'm running consistant 1.72-1.74 60'.
I'm running 3:55 gears, stock converter and 28" Hoosiers. I'm launching at idle. Maybe it's your tune??

Yea try leaving off dead idle and slamming the throttle at one time (thats what I do) flashes the converter and off we go! however the downside is, you either hook and run hard, or you spin like a bitch...http://www.talonclub.com/forum/images/smilies/biggrinflip.gif

For the times that u are running 1.7-1.8 is the best u can doo till u get faster its not the tune that does that!!! Go faster get a faster 60' if u hook up but all of us running in the 8-8.3 range usually see 1.8 sometimes a 1.7. I don't have traction bars and run 26" tires on my 3.73 gears and art carr stall convertor I get 1.6 60' times most of the times but other times I see 1.7 with a 8.0 1/8th mile time!! Maybe this will help u out.:tu:

depends on your converter. what size stall. diameter of the converter. and so on. for highway driving, your mileage won't change much if at all since it will be locked up at cruising speed. i had a restalled factory piece for awhile and could hardly tell a difference until i got on it real hard.

LOL and shane has been doing a LOT of "spinning like a bitch lately"

LOL that explains the Hallsville runs...
