Tried to install my Swanson and Superchip (JDM) this weekend and neither would allow the truck to start. The contacts for the PCM must be trashed so...............looks like I'll be attending FFW Ennis with notta. Revised goal will be to run a sub-13 second quarter on the stock program.

Can be done if you are handy with a soldering iron, but also can do more damage if you overheat and leach the Cu trace off of the board.
Radio shack sells kits for fixing boards.
I have done a fair amount of this work, touching up defense-type stuff. If you take apart the computer be sure to have ESD straps in place on a conductive surface just to be safe.

I was thinking that since the contacts are believed to be bad what is the down side ??
I worked as circuit board inspector about 20 years ago and have a soldering iron made for that work... Low heat and careful gets it done every time...
Superglue and luck fixes delaminated solder lands about 70% of the time...

I've got ESD straps, but Doug has the low temp soldering iron, that is what you need. I just have standard solding irons.
I will be glad to help, offer advice, or solder. Let me know.

Hey SIX, I may have another temp solution for you if the repair effort does not work.
I have a brand new PCM box (CUX1), never even been programed.
You would have to have it programed to pass through your PATS system, but you are welcome to borrow it if need be to get you through.
I also have a spare PSP chip (CUX1, 1.C1S904P.BIN) If that will work on Go_rilla???

I will as my friend at the dealer if he can get it programed

From what he told me tonight after his trans kit was: "I stay up all night drinking alcohol and taking pain pills for my broken ankle. I have browsers on F150 for sale, NLOC for sale and TALON f/s looking for stuff to buy" His intention was to have a clean PCM with sealed contacts for warranty work if mods were ever questioned.

Ended up a HIHOAG's place and took a close look at the board. All contacts looked good. Even added a little height to the contact via extra solder, but.................still no go on either chip. Looks like I'll be chipless for FFW/Ennis

If the board cracked when the chip was seated, it will cause a break in the lead, but it will be difficult to spot without a magnifying glass or continuity check

Sixer,
If you want, I can take the board to work and inspect under a scope for cracks or defects.

My thoughts are maybe the dealer flashed it to a sux2 or whatever the update was for 99 and the chip has the old setting? or scan it with a chip on and see if there is a P0603 code for internal ROM failure meaning it is reading the chip.. Sad day, no nanner for Rila:(

Wayne,
With FFW less than four weeks away, I'll probably just stay put where I am. The truck is running really well on the stock program and since FFW/Top Truck is bracket racing, it doesn't really matter what ET I run. Thanks for the offer.
How much does a CUX-1 cost anyway?
andy_cain
08-26-2002, 10:51 AM
No problem Six,
If you change your mind the offer is still open...since it just sits in my closet.
I have heard as much as $260. with a $100. core from Ford.
I think it varries quite a bit depending on where it comes from.
Me, I wanna think I paid under $200 total for mine with shipping.

Before I can use a chip, I will have to replace the computer. If I replace the computer (CUX-1), I already have a chip. Kind of like which came first the chip or the computer? I would like to stay with a CUX-1 to keep from voiding my warranty. :D But thanks anyway.

Actually, I was just kidding. When I had trouble with my warranty at Bankston, I immediately cancelled my warranty and received a check for $1,061 from the warranty company in Franklin, TN. So..........the joke was, I don't have a warranty. No fun when you have to explain your own joke. :D
Anyway, if HIHOAG's offer is still on the table, I think I will pull the computer and have him check out the circuits to make sure none are damaged. I'm thinking I might want to run a chip at FFW if we can solve the problem. That Vette/Viper incident on Friday night has me rethinking my decision to run the stock computer program. I'm definitely down on power in third gear.

6er,
I can take it in and visually inspect under a scope for broken traces in the circuit board, but without a circuit diagram I won't be able to check the continuity of the interconnects.
I need less hard shifts and you need more. If GoRila is female maybe we can breed with my stiff shifting SilverBack.:)

That would like make Go_rila your biotch. :p
If there are breeches in the traces, they will be immediately adjacent to the contact points on the inner side of where the chip attaches. I could have bent the chip tab just enough to damage one or more of the traces on the inward side. After we get through beating our heads against the wall on this, I'll probably make an appointment to see Wayne. :p
I understand a new computer needs to be "flashed" before it can be used. I assume a Ford dealer must do this, but would appreciate any insight into the situation.

I will be at BoneDaddy's Thursday and will bring it with me.
Yes, it does need to be programed to pass the PATS part of your system.
With FFW this close, I think the more options you have the better.
Is your chip burned for CUX 1 already?
The 4 way PSP in the picture is burned for the CUX1 but I hooked it up in my L Thursday and put her on the dyno at HP store and got Chitty results...AFR #'s were VERY fat...best I could squeeze out of it on any of the 3 programs (prog 1 is for stock) was 367.5 HP with 449.7 TQ....
My single program street chip hits 395.6 so I am going to stick with it and after things settle have Sal reburn the 4 way.

Your PATS can be programed by any locksmith that has Star Tester, much cheeper than Ford. Ford would not do it in house anyway, they would call a locksmith and charge you out the ___.
This is where I got mine done. There address is Rowlett but it is more like North Garland, just off 190. Very reasonable and they treat you well.
Samson's/Advanced Lock & Safe Service

Rowlett, TX (972)771-5213
Rowlett 972-475-3031
Rockwall 972-771-2540
Garland 972-272-5560
Dallas 214-823-2360
Plano 972-881-5383
They did me good $250 Total!!!
- Cut 2 Key's
- Re-keyed the Ignition
- Re-keyed the Driver Door
- Re-keyed the tailgate
- Programmed the two keys into the PATS
I called several places and they were by far the best price. One place wanted $350 just to program PATS/Ignition!

09-01-2002, 10:49 PM
You don't need it all rekeyed and so forth...NGS Scan tool from the dealer can set the PCM to match the existing PATS code.
I have a friend that works at a local dealer that says its a 5 minute job ($30. and a 12 pack on a Saturday afternoon when he isn't busy and its done)
If you paid $250.00, you had bigger issues than just programing the pats code to match the PCM...your talking about keys and all kinds of other unnecessary things there.:hammer:
jmlay
09-01-2002, 11:00 PM
Heck ya I had bigger issues!!! I had a wife that seems to feel the need to keep her purse, cell phone, camera and spare set of keys in the auto unlocked!!! They got the entertainment system also.
I was just saying that it does not have to be done by the dealer and that these people treated me fairly.
2 keys, 2 locks, ignition, and programmed the PATS for $250 is a good deal.
I also agree that it is a 5 min job. I stood there and watched as they did it.
If you can get it done for $30 that is great. More toys for the boys!!!

Okay,
Just for L8apex:)
Mower does not, but the yard does.
Just finished checking the nervous system of GoRila.
No traces are broken, scratched and beat up, but not broken.
Contacts are very worn.
Re-soldered someone's terrible looking solder joints on the connector. Looks like someone tried to do in their garage.:)
Easier when you have a stereozoom microscope.
Probably made no difference, but may have helped the contact points and uniformity.
