For those of you expecting something different, sorry to disappoint, but my oldest is looking for a laptop computer primarily for internet usage, but wants a good compromise between price and quality. Since I'm not a tech guy, I would appreciate any suggestions.

For those of you expecting something different, sorry to disappoint, but my oldest is looking for a laptop computer primarily for internet usage, but wants a good compromise between price and quality. Since I'm not a tech guy, I would appreciate any suggestions. I've had tremendous good luck with Dells and use one now. I've had IBM's, Compaqs and HP's. Dell is the best I've experienced in the last ten years.

The Inspiron line has some good machines. Check out the Inspiron 5160. It will handle all the internet stuff like email, surfing, and digital music. It has a 15" screen which is a little larger than the lower end machines and a good graphics set-up. All the basics are there.

Check it out at http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/inspn_5160?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&~tab=specstab (http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/inspn_5160?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&%7Etab=specstab)

I might be biased, but Dell makes a great laptop...

If you want them a bit cheaper, go to the Outlet Center on dell.com, you can search inventory on Refurb's, they come with the same warranty as factory new.

If you are going to be using it for internet purpose, school work, ect. Get the cheapest laptop. Internet crusing, data processing, school work uses very little processing power. Any new laptop will be plenty powerfull for those applications.

Any new laptop will be plenty powerfull for those applications. You should consider graphics capabilities and both video memory and RAM. The real low end machines compromise on these features.

Also I would suggest getting it at Sams Club. Why? They are the only place you can buy a laptop and return it within 6 MONTHS AND GET A NO HASSEL REFUND.NO restock fee. Full refund.
Anywhere you get a laptop, they can sometimes be Very fincky.Even if you have warranty, who wants to keep taking back for constant repairs. By buying it at Sams Club you dont have to worry. If something is going to go wrong, it will happen in first 6 months. You can just take it back and get a full refund. Then turn around and buy it again. You can bet it will have gone down in price too, so you will get it cheaper.Or if you just dont like it,see another laptop Sams got in,just return it.Buy other one you want.

I bought a Compaq laptop almost two years ago and it makes a great drip pan. I use it under my riding lawn mower. :evil

I use Toshiba satellites for all my doings. One was 2200 bucks the other was 800 after rebates. Make sure the screen will run the resolution he likes. My cheap one won't do higher resolutions...

IMHO, Dell is not the way to go if your looking for a "good compromise between price and quality". Granted, Dell has some good machines, but not at a good price. The low end Dells are nothing but SH!T......the infamous Dell warranty involves you repairing it yourself, while being walked through a whole stack of hassle on the phone.

Buy from a local retailer, take it back to them and get it fixed or replaced...no hassle. H.P. is a good compromise between price and quality(you get more for the same money).

All in MHO...:D .

Rocks

P.S. Terry is right on the mark about the resolution. My H.P. has a lower end graphics set up and the highest resolution is 1024 x 768 @ 32 bits. I don't do video games....or internet porn, like Terry does....so seeing the Herpes Warts on 16 year old girls was not necessary in my case:throw: .

We bought one a couple of years ago to use. We got the cheapest we could find at the time, a Compaq. We use ours for the same thing except we wanted the DVD player. We spent a couple of hundred more than a dedicated portable DVD player and got a much larger screen and with our wireless network, use it all over the house. I use it every Sunday because of Fantasy Football, to track games, scores, players, etc. Since you watch F1, you might consider it for when you watch the race to log on to website and get more info while the race is going on.. just something to consider..
