What are these for ????

I was messing around in the user CP a little while ago and noticed something called "reputation points". What are these for?

Some sites use reputation as a ranking system - IF you contribute positivly you gain reputation and if not you lose ... Its possible to tie rights and privledges to the rank - I havent made use of it much here
you can see the rep icon looks like this

There is a way to add and remove reputation points BUT I think its turned off..
