This one should be easy, but just want to confirm....

If you have a 50/50 mix of race fuel and 98 octane gas (assuming 5 gals a piece), does the octane rating drop if you have say 8 gals of 93 octane?
Is it really just as simple as adding 8 gals of race fuel to cover the value, or does the octane rating possibly break down with a larger amount of 93 octane provided?

Like I said, sounds easy but not sure......

Where do you get 98 octane gas?

I'm not sure what you mean either, but lets say you have 8 gals of 93 and 8 gallons of 100 octane. You simply add the two up and divide it by number of gallons to get your octane rating.

so... 93 x 8 =744
100 x 8 =800
------------
total:1544

Divide total octane # by total # of gallons, so 1544/16= 96.5 octane rating

So, the overall octane rating would be dependant upon the mix of fuel you have.

so.... 93 x 5 =465
100 x 10=1000
-------------
total: 1465

Divide 1465 by 15= 97.6 octane rating

That make sense ??

Let me add to Wes's perfect explanation. Notice how purchasing 100 octane fuel makes it darned near impossible to get a tank that already has 93 in it, up to 100 octane.

We have to buy 104 or better to stand any kind of a chance of buying enough to get our existing 93 up to 100.

So if your tune calls for 100 octane and you have a 1/4 tank (approx 7 -gallons) of 93 octane then if you put 10 gallons of 104 you will still only be at 99.47 octane rating.

100 octane fuel is a waste of money. A minimum of 104 and possibly 116 if you don't mind extra maintanance. I like the Sunoco GT Plus 104 since it has a higher oxygen content than most race fuels at 4.5%.

See....I knew it was a simple math solution, but was just checking.

My concern is that it is so hard to get our trucks to 5 gal. of gas left in the tank to go to the race track, considering travel distance. If I just go ahead and buy 10 gal. of race fuel, it widens my opportunity to use the race fuel tune I have.

Yes this is a expensive solution, but its easier than trying to limp the truck into the race track with a 1/8 tank of gas left.....

My L would slosh fuel and die on launch if it had less than 5-8gals in it. The truck still has 5 gals at the red mark from the tanks I have pulled and put pumps in. Race fuel is cheap insurance when you are racing hot tunes. I'd pay $60 bucks to insure my engine each time I race. I would drive it to the track and if it ran out I would pull over and put the race fuel in it nad go to the track on straight 104. Most tuners set weak race tunes because they know people don't buy enough race fuel or mix it strong enough. Also some owners forget to switch back to the street tune for a few days.

LOL....ask Adam if he ever had to pull over to the side of the road with me so I could put gas in my tank?

Terry is dead right. It is far better to spend the extra on race fuel than to detonate the motor on a race tune.

Just a heads up....when my truck runs out of gas there is still a gallon or so left in the tank. For the Hallsville trip, I usually started out with around 7-8 gallons. You can also set your trip read out to give you miles left to fill up. This was usually on 80-90 miles when I started out. When mine hits 24...my truck shuts down. EDITED:D ....I better mention where the 90 miles on the odometer was at. That was from the Burger King just before we get on 80 or 20.

Hope some of that helps. I spent alot of time trying to figure out the perfect amount of gas to get to each track:D .
