Hey guys... Need to know if there is anything y'all recommend for rear axle lube?

I noticed that my differential cover is wet so it has been leaking and I want to check it and top it off.

I am assuming it's no different that any other car I've done in the past... pull the plug, put the pinkie in and see where it's at.

So... what type of fluid? Book says 80w-90 premium rear axle lube.

Can I put something like Slick50 to it or just stay stock?

I say Slick50 only as an example... I run royal Purple in the engine.

Thanks,

Beaudee

My o4 says use only synthetic 75-140.My truck was brand new and down 1 pint.I would use only synthetic, a good one is Royal Purple 75W-140 Hi Performance Synthetic gear lube. Also found water in differential from plastice snap in fitting not high enough above frame channel under bed.I removed it and tapped the hole with 1/4-18NPT tap , installed brass bushing tapped other end of bushing 1/8-27 NPT and installed a taller brass stand-off.Used a 1/8-27 pipe to a hose fitting with the barbs.Worked great. The hole in the channel under the bed is 7/16.This is the final hole for 1/4-18npt, no drilling needed!Hope that solves the water problem.I guess i need to stay out of the deep puddles on the road. :d

Rick,

I'm looking at my '02 manual - it says 80w-90, too. I'm plan on going RP again on the engine (at 30k), the transmission for sure and maybe the rear-axle, too.

The deal with RP is that they evidently only sell 80w-90 by the 5 gal. pail. http://www.royalpurple.com/prodsa/mgeara.html http://www.talonclub.com/forum/images/smilies/confused.gif We only need 3.3 - 3.8 L (7.5 - 8.0 pints). 5 gallons = 19 liters, btw by my calculations.http://www.talonclub.com/forum/images/smilies/cool.gif http://www.tyzo.com/travel_tools/metric_converter.html

A little more digging, and I found out Mobile1 carries 80w-90 in much smaller containers: http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Other_Products/Mobilube_HD_Plus_80W-90.aspx

Also, Rick what weight RP are you running in the engine? What about oil consumption? I'd appreciate your info. I burn about 1 qt. of RP 5w-20 every ~1K miles.

Ronald

Thanks y'all... I used to get my Royal Purple at NAPA... had a special price from the manager in Frisco and they new guy wouldn't even honor it once... too bad... I change it every 2,500 to 3,000. No big loss for them... just an attitude problem...

I'll be heading to Dicks Auto Parts in the morning.

1/4-18male NPT to a 1/8-27femaleNPT brass bushing and a 1/8-27NPT to a barb brass fitting, 2 stainless worm gear clamps,1/4-18NPT tap,1/8-27NPT tap can be purchased @ Turner Hardware Josey Lane @ Valley View Farmers Branch.Great hardware store, lots of cool stuff! They also have the things needed for boost bypass mod..The brass 1/8-27 barb fitting may need to be trimmed around the hex to fit in the tapped final hole. The air vent hose on the L. will eventually be dangling when the plastic snap on fitting stand-off cracks away. This is a good easy fix and will keep water out of rear end! :d

I run the 5w30... as for oil consumption... I change it too often to even notice any so I am not much help there. I do get on it like everyone else but I've never noticed any consumption.

Back in the beginning... I ran some other brand (don't remember) and occasionally when I would either start it or rev it I would see white smoke. All that went away with synthetic
