pretty interesting......

One evening a grandson was talking to his grandmother about current events. The grandson asked his grandmother what she thought about the shootings at schools, the computer age, and just things in general.

The Grandma replied, "Well, let me think a minute, I was born, before television, penicillin, polio shots, frozen foods, Xerox, contact lenses, Frisbees and the pill. There was no radar, credit cards, laser beams or ball-p! oint pens. Man had not invented pantyhose, air conditio! ners, dishwashers, clothes dryers, and the clothes were hung out to dry in the fresh air and man hadn't yet walked on the moon.

Your Grandfather and I got married first and then lived together. Every family had a father and a mother. Until I was 25, I called every man older than me, 'Sir' and after I turned 25, I still called policemen and every man with a title, "Sir.' We were before gay-rights, computer-dating, dual careers, daycare centers an! d group therapy

Our lives were governed by the Ten Commandment s, good judgment, and common sense. We were taught to know the difference between right and wrong and to stand up and take responsibility for our actions.

Serving your country was a privilege; living in this country was a bigger privilege. We thought fast food was what people ate during Lent. Having a meaningful relationship meant getting along with your cousins. Draft dodgers were people who closed their front doors when the evening breeze started. Time-sharing meant time the family spent together in the evenings
and weekends, not purchasing condominiums.

We never heard of FM radios, tape decks, CDs, electric typewriters, yogurt, or guys wearing earrings. We listened to the Big Bands, Jack Benny and the President's speeches on our radios. And I don't ever remember any kid blowing his brains out listening to Tommy Dorsey. If you saw anything with "Made in Japan" on it, it was junk. The term "making out" referred to how you did on your school exam. Pizza Hut, McDonald's and instant coffee were unheard of.

We had 5 &10 cent stores where you could actually buy things for 5 and 10 cents. Ice-cream cones, phone calls, rides on a streetcar and a Pepsi were all a nickel. And if you didn't want to splurge, you could spend your nickel on enough stamps to mail 1 letter and 2 postcards.

You could b! uy a new Chevy Coupe for $600 but who could afford one? Too bad, because gas was 11 cents a gallon. In my day, "grass" was mowed, "coke" was a cold drink, "pot" was something your mother cooked in and "rock music" was your grandmother's lullaby. "Aids" were helpers in the Principal's office," chip" meant a piece of wood, "hardware" was found in a hardware store and "software" wasn't even a word.

And we were the last generation to actually believe that a lady needed a husband to have a baby. No wonder people call us "old and confused" and say there is a generati! on gap.....and how old do you think I am ???.....

I bet you have this old lady in mind...you are in for a shock!

Read on to see -- pretty scary if you think about it and pretty sad at the same time.

This Woman would be only 58 years old!

No, not really. I remember most of that.

I laugh when I read stuff like this, because it's so patently "good-old-days"-ish.

That is what they want you to believe, and how they lived their lives, narrowly. But the truth is much darker, and the differences to today are only that we hear much more about the depravities, thanks to media hype.

In that "grandmother's" day, they had pennecillin and such, they had radio, they had guns, they had killings, they had rape; you just never heard about it because most of it happened in the "bad" areas of town, or out in the country, and never got reported beyond a blurb in the police blotter. They also had sex, condoms, broken condoms, and accidental pregnancies. They even had abortions--tho they typically happened in an alley, back room, or bathroom with a coathanger.

Chances are, this lady was white; were she black, her description of how men addressed her would have some variation of the "N" word. Only middle-upper-class white women lived this sort of life, the rest were caught up in the unreported crime that pervaded the rest of society.

Drugs and alcohol were as rampant as they are today, alcohol even moreso, making up the difference in the drugs. Drinking in those days was a sport, not just an activity, and the amount people drank on a regular basis would likely kill any one of us today. People today make such a big deal out of drinking a case of "light beer"--come back when you can start drinking martinis or hard liquor at 5pm, stop at midnight, stagger (or drive) home, then get up at 5am the next day and work all day. Today's "hard drinkers" are nothing more than children compared to those in the "good old days".

Also, back in her "day", the rule for children was: "Have 5 to raise 3". Yes, 40% mortality rate was EXPECTED in those days, and that's just childbirth: expected childhood diseases (thanks to a lack of vaccines) ran the gamut from chicken pox, mumps, measels, whooping cough; to polio, typhiod, smallpox. All of these could kill--and usually did.

Life in the "old days" was no better than it is now.--it was definitely more dangerous, across the board, and more things could kill you. It wasn't any more "moral" than today--there were plenty of people who would as soon cut your throat as look at you, in about the same percentages as today. And the diseases that don't kill today, killed yesterday, and did so quite painfully.

Life today is definitely much easier--at least if you happen to live in America, Canada, or Western Europe. Otherwise, you're facing the same pitfalls people faced in this country 100+ years ago, and the likelyhood your life would suck overall.

Lesson?? Enjoy what you have, stop longing for what you do'nt have, and what you thought used to be--it's not what you think.

Alright, enough.

 the shop is on hold pending a job and the sale of the other house. I've been sick for two weeks, actually; not to mention the lack of interweb at the house (dialup only), so I've been concentrating on other things at the house, and I only get online at the store when Monica has me working it.
