Anyone know what life is like this time of year in downtown Milwaukee? I understand that tomorrow's high is going to be 30 and the low of 15 ! http://www.talonclub.com/forum/images/smilies/eek2.gifGotta love "Lake Effect" Snow.

We've done the whole "arctic circle" thing before, but I'll probably be doing this gig solo with Elaine and the L staying here.

Also, this question is probably directed toward Ivanhoe/Milton: If I maintain a Texas residence/domicillary, but work "on-sight" in say DC or Milwaukee...am I hit with STATE income taxes even though I "hang-my-hat" in Frisco, TX, seeing how TX doesn't has a STATE income tax? http://www.talonclub.com/forum/images/smilies/thumbsup.gif

Negotiations are ongoing with those "Yankees".http://www.talonclub.com/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Thanks, fellers !

Milwaukee is supposed to be "up and coming".. in regard to state income tax, is this a short term gig? are you doing as a contractor or an employee?

I could be wrong, but...I think it's not where you live but where you work. I have a patient who's father (and patient) lives in Marietta (OK) and works in Garland (now that's a commute) Does not pay state tax and OK does have a state income tax.

And I think its the other way around. If you live, and that term is defined, somewhere and work somewhere else, its where you live that determines what taxes you pay. But you have to maintain a residence in the state/municipality to claim it as your homestead. Ronald has the upper hand in that he has an address/mailbox in Texas, along with a drivers lisc, etc that proves he lives there. The longer term question will be if he is working full time in WI, rents an apt, gets bills and mail there, at what point does this really become his home?
Ronald, if you know your schedule, does it include a certain amount of time that you stay in Dallas to work or to have respite? or do you have to be up there the entire time, with any time away being at your own expense? do they pay for your travel expense? these kind of issues are the one that will help determine your tax status. However, you might need to check on one issue, in Erie everyone that works here has to pay a right to work tax of about $35 per year :Bullshit :Bullshit :Bullshit That goes for EVERYONE irrespective of where you are from..

John,

Your patients' tax situation sounds very "suspect". http://www.talonclub.com/forum/images/smilies/cool.gif

Dana,

This consulting gig (per diem - travel/lodging) is indefinite with possibility of going perm. I'll do it for now until I can find something closer to DFW / Elaine - we'll see.

I spoke with my cousin in Fon Du Lac this morning and said they got 6" of new snow, but it's probably the last real snow-fall of the year.

Brad says ice-fishing is pretty damned fun, as well as, the 3-hour long moto-cross races on Lake Winnebago. Everyone drives their vehicles like a mile onto the winter lake-ice and watch the races. I can just see Suzie out there on the lake-ice. http://www.talonclub.com/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Brad accepted a promotion, recently, and is performing various Mech. Eng work on the Mercury 1000 HP line of engines. He said he works alongside the guys that dyno them on the racks.

This might be fun! http://www.talonclub.com/forum/images/smilies/nana.gifI'll have to see if I can't get a a guest-invite.http://www.talonclub.com/forum/images/smilies/banana2.gif

I'm taking the camera for the trip and the lap-top should be inbound soon.

Ronald, if you can get the gig to turn into full time employment with benefits, etc. I would go for it. You can always move back to Tx. The summers up here are GREAT!! you have to have a winter beater but that isnt too bad and it helps keep the miles off of the L.
If you can get into a Homewood Suite and keep the room all the time, then you can get groceries, plus they have a pretty decent breakfast bar and evening reception. Free beer, etc. The rooms are large so you dont feel cramped in. Believe me, there are a lot worse places to live than Milwaukee.
Congrats..

I know that people who go to work in Kuwait or Saudi Arabia pay no tax - and thats strictly based on where they work...

I know that pro ball players have to pay tax on their income where they work. Example, if a Dallas Maverick player plays a game in Houston one night and Florida the next and Washington the night after, he has to pay state tax in those states that have a state income tax. Payroll for pro teams has to be a biatch.

That is true, but that is because those states have passed a law that treats those athletes differently. And who is going to cry for them :crying: :crying: ?

uh, no one but their spouse..

I know of one instance of State income tax. Many years ago when I worked at DFW airport, there where several fellers from OK who paid no state income tax.
They commuted so far to work each day, I bet they spent more on gas than they would have paid in taxes.

I also know that Jersey and New York have an agreement to stick it up the employees ass no matter where they work....I believe they tax you for where you live there instead of where you work. P.A. may be part of this deal also....R.I. is and so is Connecticut.

By the way...Congrats on the new gig.... . Kick some ass out there:tu: :tu: :tu: .

Oh yeah...if you want...I can pick one night a week to drop by and check on Elaine for you...:evil . The married woman I was checking on until the recently, just got a divorce, she is off the schedule.

When I lived in CA I paid CA state income tax. When I moved back to TX but continued to work for the same CA company I stopped paying CA income tax.
My former employer does not have an office in TX either.

That's fine, Uncle Rocks, :evil but if you even TOUCH Suzie while I'm gone... we'll have words! :hammer::rll:

Elaine's telling me that there's no sense in me taking my L keys with me to WI - I don't like the sound of this.:D

I was hoping for the San Diego defense-contractor gig, but they were dragging their feet. I'd like to check out the whole So-Cal. scene.

I'll give those Cheese-Heads a good TALON schoolin, though. http://www.talonclub.com/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gifhttp://www.talonclub.com/forum/images/smilies/burnout.gif

Ronald, I hate to tell you this, but I feel pretty sure you will be paying WI state taxes.
Wisconsin For 1NPR will tell ya. I know some states have agreements that people on the borders don't pay the taxes in the state they are working. But last time I looked WI and TX don't exactly share a border. When I worked in MN, people working there from out of state (and they were commuting on the weekends) paid the MN state tax (I remember someone whining about it).
anyway, look at page 3

It sucks to have to work so far away. I can't imagine a job market so bad you can't find employment in the metroplex or the state it is just too large! Good luck up there and watch for drive by cheesings:eek2:

Congrats Ronald... no biggie on the state taxes, because they come off your fed taxes and you might end up paying no fed taxes on your end. Also, your living expenses up there are deductible as well. In your shoes, I sure as heck wouldn't get an apt, and just live in a cheap hotel and live off them, the daily cost is about the same as an apt, and you usualy get at least a free breakfast.

Me and Monica will keep an eye on Elaine, and I won't thrash Suzay too badly on the autocross course... :d

10,000 comedians out of work (IT people, too - well 1 less now) and you monkies think you need to be funny! http://www.talonclub.com/forum/images/smilies/rofl2.gif

Packing suit-cases like a mad-man and not looking forward to Elaine's boo-hooing at DFW this evening. http://www.talonclub.com/forum/images/smilies/cool.gif

Yo Ron,

Get used to hearing this when ever you order anything to eat "YOU WANT CHEESE ON THAT". Good Luck, and take your walking on the moon clothes because it gets a bit chilly at that latitude!

Yeah, because you were too busy lolligagging on TALON to get packed on Sunday... :d

FYI, folks... I talked to him last night, he's WALKING to work in the snow (6 inches last count), and he has a nice waterfront view from his hotel room. I told him if he sent me some $$$, I'd not tell about the lap dancers in his room... :d

But he's doing well, and already has a guy from Informatica talking to him about a future gig that will bring him back home.

[/:ron], figured some of ya would want to know. :tu:

What's up? :D Alot has been going on with this very "fluid" on-going situation as to where I'll end up next! I shouldn't mention much, but I need to get over my fear of flying/heights, fast.

This IT/SWAT-team gig is kind of addictive. knana Speaking of SWAT, I was walking to lunch Sunday downtown and saw Milwaukee SWAT on practice maneuvers with ARs.:bows I spoke briefly with one of them as he was walking past - looked like a Sig or Glock on his thigh.

The wind-chill this afternoon on the walk home was 25. Walking is by choice - parking is a b#tch, here.

No L sightings, thus far - just a black WS6 and Camaro SS. Everyone seems to drive sub-compacts and a few big SUVS.

The high temp. today here was 40 - living like a monk, too. :crying: :D

Saw a new black SSR w/dealer plates leaving my hotel (The Knickerbocker) this week.

Ron... I was born and raised in Milwaukee. You are in for a real treat. Go get some brat's and enjoy.

Cruise up and down Lake Drive north of downtown. You'll see some of the most awesome homes ever.

Then take a weekend off and head southwest to Lake Geneva.

Too bad you don't have the L with you. The roads up there are perfect to drive for hours with no destination in mind.

Twisties, curves and hills. Maybe you can borrow Wes' Z06?
