Damn nice vid. Tyson. Thanks again. I have it downloaded on my hard drive. My daughter told me earlier that watching it, 10 times with the volume turned all the way up, was enough for her...LOL.

Again...excellent work. It is real darn hard to get a clear vid of a race sometimes.

Oh man he had that race won, he could of backed off and still won, I know what I would have done, that guy is a dumbazzz.:)

Nice run:tu:

LOL...thanks for the :tu: everyone. Quite honestly, if I where watching that race, not knowing the guy driving the truck was trying to get a number, I probably would have called him a dumb-ass too:d . It had to look crazy...a guy in a bracket race taking off like a bat out of hell and not letting off of it:confused: .

Gotta love the sound of that Kenne Bell spinning on take off! Gawddam!

How many pounds of boost were you running on that run?

Ron, never runs below 20.

Avalanche
03-17-2005, 05:46 PM
Yea Mark Howard is right he was running right between 18 and 19 lbs. His 11.05 run at FFW he was running 19lbs. I know he corrected me. :hammer:

You better go out to the pasture and find some more horses if you plan to call out the BIG DAWG.:d

Nice run. That k/b sounds sweet. I be seeing you at the track soon.;)

Okay, maybe with the cams and heads it lowers the boost. I have an excell spreadsheet that is verified across numerous pulley sizes. Ron are you running and 8.5" lower and a 2.25" upper. I will run the model on verified sizes.

LOL...........Is it making you crazy Mark...:rll: . Engineers kill me...:hammer: ...:evil .

I was running a 6lb lower and a 2.5 upper at kennedale. I was running a 6lb lower and a 2.75 at Hallsville for the 11.05 run. With a 3 upper she did a 11.21 the same day at Hallsville.

The gage hit right at 18 at Kennedale and 19 at Hallsville. I think the reason it only hit 18 at Kennedale is it didn't have time to build anymose before I shut it down.

Yes...the ported heads and ported lower intake allow alot more breathing room. The same deal happened when I went with my long tubes....I lost boost but gained power. It's obviously making more power-more effeciently when allowed to breath.

2.50 upper with a 4lb lower used to make 20-rivet lbs before the upper part of the motor was done.

I can't go into alot of details, mostly because of lack of knowledge, but the cams on my motor are some sort of experiment Jim is doing to make more H.P. without adding to the already rediculous torque at the launch. The truck is comming on real hard from the 1/8th on.

It's not driving me crazy, I like data, and experiments, that's what I do.

Maybe I'll even spec my own camshafts:tu:

I know Mark, that's why I was teasing at you. If I could tell you more about the cams I would.....but it's a little beyond my knowledge base. Maybe they would tell you what the specs are of their, "shop grind" cams, if you call them. Right now I think their are about 3 or 4 motors with them. They all seem to be performing well.

By the by...that excell sheet would be nice to see...if your of the mind to share:D .

Have you done numbers for ported heads and/or intakes?

In my earlier post about the boost I was reading, the 20 rivet I am guessing was about 22-23. I have a 30lb gage now, so I can know when it gets above 20...how much above 20 it goes.

Thanks Mark.........I haven't looked at it yet, but I assume it is for a basicly stock upper end with Long Tubes. I may be able to draw some sort of correlation between that and my new boost.

Thanks...Ron:D

Ron if you give me some pullies sizes and boost observed I will insert a new model in the chart for "Ron's set up".

:tu: ...........I will try to get them together some time this evening. That would be cool. I am on some pretty heavy meds right now, so my thinking is off a little......(no, not recreational meds:d )...I apparently did some kind of damage to my upper back/diaghram over the weekend...the pain combined with not being able to breath, sent me to the hospital on Weds. morning. By the way, everyone be aware of how your positioned in your seats while launching. Leaning forward can cause a form of whip lash when you launch. Especially at 600 + H.P. and 700+ Ft lbs of torque.

Anyway...I will try to get with Howard and see if we can remember the boost numbers with the different set up's.

03LightningRocks
03-18-2005, 05:33 PM
Oh...I assume you need the peak boost on each run. Sometimes I only hit the highest boost number for a second or two just before the run ends. For instance..at Hallsville, I was between 16-17 lbs untill about the 1000 ft..then it climbed to 18 just as I crossed the line.

i suppose as far as cam grinds go you could take away from the lower end torque range and make a little more on top with a different cam grind. quite simply put its a hotter cam. probably moves the rpm range of the cam up. mostly through manipulating duration and overlap (i think). the only thing i dont like about Jim (JDM) is that he doesnt tell anyone his cam profiles or how he dials in the cams. To me and many others, i want to know wtf im getting in my motor. besides its probably better for the r&d of lightning racing all together. but what do i know?

Gavin, your explanation above sounds pretty much like what I was told. I never asked the specifecs on the profile, so I was not aware that they didn't want to share. If my motor blows up;) , we can pull the cam out and put a micrometer to it...:D .

Scott, I have a bad habit of leaning forward slightly on the launch, so I get thrown back against the seat. It has caused me problems before, just not this severe. Hell, I thought I was having a fricking heart attack.... when I had a sharp pain in the middle of my back and couldn't take a breath.

If there is anyway that you can give me boost at RPMs, I can change the model a bit. Hope that you are feeling better soon. I move the seat up a lot during drag racing to eliminate the head snap effect, and to reach the line lock button.:tu:

I will see what I can come up with....Head snap effect is a good way to describe the issue. I have to make a better effort to keep my head flat against the seat.
:hammer: .....maybe a hahns device...LOL.

Might be a good idea, either that or you really need to cinch those belts down harder. And don't mess with that snap too much, you *can* hurt yourself pretty badly--then we woudln't have you to make fun of you.
