Or, "Oil Consumption Issues, Part Deaux":

Well, I went and did an oil change yesterday, and I didn't like what I saw, so I took some pics for your amusement:

This is what it looks like under the intake boot:
http://viral-humanity.info/gallery/albums/album01/PICT0004.sized.jpg

Lots of oil and gunk. WTF?? I've heard of Lightning's having oil infiltration problems, but like *this*??

It's even crawling up the blower case...
http://viral-humanity.info/gallery/albums/album01/PICT0009.sized.jpg

This is the driver's side PCV vent, that runs to the boot:
http://viral-humanity.info/gallery/albums/album01/PICT0008.sized.jpg

Another angle:
http://viral-humanity.info/gallery/albums/album01/PICT0010.sized.jpg[/img[

Even making freakin' stalagmites:
[img]http://viral-humanity.info/gallery/albums/album01/PICT0014.sized.jpg

Good shot from the boot back to the driver's side valve cover and PCV vent:
http://viral-humanity.info/gallery/albums/album01/PICT0019.sized.jpg

Here's how the throttle body looks:
http://viral-humanity.info/gallery/albums/album01/PICT0033.sized.jpg

And the intake boot:
http://viral-humanity.info/gallery/albums/album01/PICT0037.sized.jpg
http://viral-humanity.info/gallery/albums/album01/PICT0039.sized.jpg
http://viral-humanity.info/gallery/albums/album01/PICT0040.sized.jpg

Effin' mess, I'd say.

So, I'm gonna try to get the dealer to clean this up, under the extended warranty, including pulling the blower and intercooler and cleaning them. If they don't, I'll end up doing it myself, dammit.

And, no matter what they do, I'm installing these:
http://viral-humanity.info/gallery/albums/album01/PICT0021.sized.jpg

This is how it'll look installed (this is passenger side):
http://viral-humanity.info/gallery/albums/album01/PICT0024.sized.jpg

The fit will be better, and it'll be mounted to the firewall. The second one will go on the other side, for the same reason. I'm also going to stuff steel wool into the lines just upstread of the valves covers, to help filter any oil mist as soon as possible.

fake edit: oh, yeah, check this out:

WTF?? Looks like they cut out that hole with a freakin' plasma cutter!! Does everyone else's fender hole look like this??

I am guessing that you purchased your Lightning used:cool: . After seeing some of the shannegans that go on when our fellow Talon members sell their Lightnings, I in no way would buy a used one...LOL. I am still waiting for someone to post in here that they just bought the special edition Lightning with the Navigator motor...LMAO.

Point is....who ever owned that Lightning before you was a dip sh!t shade tree modder....:nono: . Looking at all the oil in your throttle body, he probably dogged the sh!t out of it. What a mess....:eek2:

Rocks

Nope, my wife bought it brand-new for me in April of '01. I've put the 50k on it myself as a daily driver, and the only mod on it is the Magnaflow cat-back. And that's why I'm surprised to see that, because either Ford decided to do something odd, or someone decided to do this when I wasn't looking.

I'm not terrifically hard on it, but I don't baby it, either. So the oil was a surprise, too.

Would you post a pic of your fender opening, so I can get an idea of what it's supposed to look like?? :tu:

Like I said before, that's why I'm surprised: *I* certainly didn't do it (don't even have a plasma cutter), and I don't remember asking anyone to do it, and the only people to work on it are the guys at Bankston--now you know why I'm surprised.

Would you mind, if you can get to it, posting a pic of your fender opening, so I can get an idea of what it's supposed to look like?

Holy Crap:eek:   ....it must have come from Ford that way then. As for the oil, yours seems like alot more than what guys usually post about. I really did think maybe it was caused by using a boatload of boost. Mine get's some oil in it, but never that bad.

I'll try to snap a pic....;)

Looks like your boot is cut where it meets the t/b thats probly where the oil is leaking out.

Also do a search

   I just learned something...LOL. Mine is not as messy as yours, but it definitly looks like Ford had a brain fart after the assembly was done. Mine is cut also...and it is also an uneven cut. It looks like they may have used some electric sheet metal cutters on it and then they made a half ass attempt at painting over the edge.

Sorry...I couldn't get a pic without taking stuff apart and I am not in the mood to work right now.

Maybe it is Fords way of giving each one of us a custom job...LMAO.

when i put my new air box on i noticed the part they cut out was left inside my stock box under the filter. it was not that bad of a chop job though.

i would just pull the blower and clean it myself. You can take it in and since your going to try to get them to do it, it will be under warranty and if the tech is shady he might just spray some cleaner in there and wipe everything off and not even pull the blower....

Id just do it myself... If you want some help id be willing to lend a hand seeing that i spend today with jeremey and his friend looking for a L and I didnt pull mine to clean it. His buddy did get one.

I looked at my air-filter fender inlet hole and it's as smooth-cut as Doug's pic.

No oil sloppin' around on the exterior of the engine/blower, either.

My intake suffered some pretty heavy oil also, so I replaced the PCV, and capped off the downstream intake connect, and put a breather on the valve cover- problem solved- for me.

I'm pushing 14-16 lbs boost, So far that keeps it clean, since the 2nd line has NO use, get rid of the straight line suction. Keep the tube in case you run across an Ahole for inspection.

My oil wasn't comimg up from the PCV valve side.

It's cool man.. I appreciate you looking. What year is your L?? I'm thinking that the early examples (99-01) had a few rough edges like this, 'til they decided to pass on the good stuff to the rest of the line; either that, or someone cut it when I wasn't looking. I was talking to my wife about this, and she told me that, when she had the cat-back put on, the salesman who sold it to us (remember, she worked at Bankston at the time) took it out to have the cat-back put on, and we're thinking that maybe he slipped the tech a few bucks to open the hole a bit. If you look, you'll see where the snorkel hit, and it's right inside the contact line.

I installed an oil sep. both sides.Pass side the plumb. holds it in place.Drivers side there is an unused bracket by the egr valve. It made a nice mount for sep. on that side.I used a piece of alum with a twist to make the bracket.Anyone know what that unused bracket is for by the egr valve?Been running my L. new with these and have noticed that the sep. on the pass. side collects more than the drivers side. The 100 bucks is well worth the money to prevent that mess.I would like to remove the valve cover and tac weld a baffle on the inside one of these days. :tu:

Wow, that scares me a little Tex. If anyone here has an abused lightning its me, BUT I know I have that kind of oil problem or consumption, makes me want to put on a sep anyways, and pull the blower to check.

Beau: not surprising, since it's the driver's side that is the "fresh air inlet" side. The valve covers have a baffle box in them, so I think the bes thing to do is fill this with steel wool, to act as a filter, and it will never deteriorate.

BlackSunshine: Maybe we can hook up with PoorSVTMan and have a blower/intercooler cleaning party.. rent a parts washer... and make it all go away. :D

I ran the Swanson "dime mod" with a Cobra PCV valve on the passenger side for over 20K. I put this on after I cleaned my intercooler. There was not one drop of oil anywhere- not in the boot, tb,or upper. This is the only sure way I knowto stop it.

However I'm not sure I would recommend this for higher boosted applications though.
