View Full Version : 97 Mustang GT Progress Report

I took the car to the track for the first time a few weeks ago and ran a best of 9.4 at 76mph at Kennedale. The best 60' I could get was 2.2 on the street tires. Launching at anything over idle would result in me sitting still while the tires spun.
Tonight me and my dad went to Kennedale for some grudge racing and I was able to drop the 60' to a 2.0 and run a 9.0 at 78mph after some practice. I think that with some slicks I should be able to launch with some anger and maybe pull a 1.8 or so which should put me around 8.7-8.8. I raced another mustang tonight that pulled a 1.68 60' and ran a 7.9 at 84mph. This tells me that I'm leaving a lot on the table by not being able to launch this bad boy.
So next up for the mustang are some Lower control arms (should I also go with the uppers?) a drive shaft safety loop and some slicks ( what size wheel and tire combo should I go with?)

sweet, you keepin it sleeper style? or make it loud with a rediculous cam grind. if you are going sleeper, it would neat to have a turbo setup on it.

I was planning on going with some cams and then Nitrous because I was told that with the heads that it has and the compression being about 10.5-1 that I wouldnt be able to add boost to this motor. It's already loud with the headers and the O/R H pipe so a little cam action would be pretty cool.

you could do turbo, but would have to keep the boost very mild. im sure nitrous would be a better pick. i just figure you might go built with it. when u put the bottle on it you should drop by and take me for a ride in it :d

Went to Kennedale tonight and ran a best of 8.916 @ 78.76mph with a 2.003 '60ft. I think this is about the best I'm going to be able to get without slicks. The switch to slicks is going to be expensive. Slicks and wheels, line lock, control arms, and drive shaft safety loop. Damn thats some coin.

You could easily run a blower on that motor, but the sad thing is that you will only make about 320rw max on about 10-12lbs of boost. :o My vote would be to buy a 96-98 Cobra aluminum block, and build it for boost. Slap some p&p heads with blower cams, and finally a big vortech and go crazy.
You could also build the car for nitrous in the same aspect, just get some flat top pistons, and a big bottle. :banana:
Either way, the 96-98 motors are very sad, and do not give you a good starting point for making any power.

We have a white 99GT at the shop. With a base Vortech kit at 5-6psi we tuned 352 rwhp at 11.5 A/F and 16' timing.

The 99+ have the PI heads, which completely change the possibilities of the 2V motor. The obvious being the start out horsepower of 215-225 for the 96-98, to 260 for the 99+ Gt's, which make things easier on you. Other than that, the heads flow much better, and allow more room to build greater hp numbers.
Granted it is possible to make power with the 96-98 motor, you should consider upgrading the heads and bottom end before adding a power adder of any kind, as those motors are not cheap.

your buddy Breck turned 400+hp in his 96 cobra, vortech blower, LT's, PI Heads
His race tune turned about 450hp :eek2:

I don't know if this will help any but I had a 03 Mustang GT 5 spd I put 3.73 in it, slaped on some 26 inch slicks and the car turned a best of 8.69 and a dozen or more 8.70-79. No mods but did take out air filter. Then I put on a 100 shot (dry) of Nitrous and the car ran a best of 7.87 at 88.06 mph and a 1.683 60' foot. I did get a 1.61 60' but missed 3rd. The slicks make all the difference. I ran my slicks at 18 psi and they were Goodyear

i remember breck and the whole fast times crew. i didnt know he put an s/c on that thing, we'll have to run for some friendly competition sometime ;)

its a fun car to ride in, he walks away from 600cc bikes at a 100 punch :nana2. it took no time at all to hit 150mph :eek2:

Adam, speedtek in NRH on 121 has 17"(26" tall) MT et streets. Get some 17" factory rims from a salvage yard if you can't drop coin for wheels right now. I run these tires on my car (when I don't grenade it) with stretched out Cobra R's :burnout:

Just a lil' FYI...The '96 Cobra heads have 4-valves per cylinder. The PI(Performance Improved) were factory on the '99-'04 Mustang GT's and Lightnings, and are 2-valve per cylinder heads.
The 32 valve Cobra motors were pretty much completely different animals. In '96, a Cobra was good for an additional 90 to 100 HP at the wheels in bone stock form over a 5 speed GT(260 RWHP(Cobra)-VS-170 RWHP(GT)).
The 2-valve heads that came stock on the '96-'98 GT's were fricking boat anchors which gave up the ghost at around 4800 rpm. Hence the new for '99 PI units, which were good for about 50 HP over the '96-'98 junk heads.:tu:
