What are some recs on Radar detectors? I kow several guys like the Viper, but several reveiws give it a thumbs down as compared to the Escort. They say the Viper is sh!t when it comes to POP radar guns.
So what say you?

Valentine 1 all the way. Mine saved me from one of TX finest hiding under a bridge with a laser yesterday on I-45 near Hunstsville. It picked up the shot on the guy in front of me in plenty of time for me to test the ABS. :d

LOL.............above I said Viper...I meant V-1. The valentine get's skunked in every independent test by the top escort. This is what I don't understand. Why all the test show the V1 to be below the escort...but fellers around here claim it is the stuff. Could it be that they are both good, with the escort being just a tad better?
Oh by the way.....Valetine will only pick up on laser if the cop happens to aim it at your window...which they don't do very often. The only other way it detected it is if the guy right in front of you got checked. So if your out there on your own....you be caught if it is laser. The only defense against laser is a jammer like the M20 or M40 that Terry likes to install.
Can I get some of you fellers to go to this link and maybe give your thoughts on the testing? There are a few others and they all give the Escort better marks...

First off, if those "tests" were done by Petersen (I think) publishing, or that "writer" who always seems to have "data" that shows the V1 as being the worst, you might as well wipe yer ass with the pages, because ALL of those tests are skewed to favor ANYTHING but the Valentine (I think the guy hates Mike Valentine for some reason).
Second off, the V1 is the best detector, hands-down. I was going to lunch with one of my former coworkers, and we had his Escort on the dash, to see how it fared against my V1, and the V1 went off before we saw the cop (over the hill on MArsh in Addison), and the Escrot didn't go off 'til after the cop passed. :hammer:
As for laser: best place to read up on how it works, is the V1 site, they have an excellent explanation of how they work, and how the V1 works against them. I"ve had what happend to Wht95Lightning happen to me, and I caought them befoer I got hit by scatter alone--the range isn't near what it is with traditional microwave bands, but there's still enough warning if you're lucky, and if now, you just hammer the brakes and hope for a lesser ticket (true for all detectors).
I've had my V1 for 4 years now, and I've saved well above the cost of the detector, and it doesn't have POP detection. Alot of detection isn't just how well the dtector picks up signals, but in how you interpret them. And, for my money, the V1 does the best, period. If you want more :ron:s, let me know, I've got some doozies. :tu:
Good luck

If that one guy (damned if I can rememebr his name) is involved in any of these, it's a vendetta. Strip his opinions out, and things change drastically.

Really Tex, I don't buy the theory that this one guy has made it his mission to screw V1. What's more, I don't beleive he has the pull to fake results all over the country. The picture is really not that bad anyway. If you read the ratings, you will find that they are all within pubey hairs of each other. One issue that had V1 in the shitter(pop mode), seems V1 has that now.
I think these two detectors are the same.....user options is all that differenciates them from each other. Now cost is an issue, with the V1 being 100 bucks more. But V1 seems to have upgrade abilites....and I don't see this option with Escort.

I have an escort, I've been very happy with it. However, I believe that my next one will be a V1 just because my escort doesn't have rear and side sensing. Me and one of my buddies also did a test with his V1 and my Escort side by side on a 800 mile trip. The V1 was a little more sensitive and would give a little more time before we saw the officer, however it also triggered several dozen false alarms where my Escort did not.

It's a 7500 but Keynan has already called dibz. So unless he changes his mind it's off the market pending funds.
03LightningRocks
06-19-2005, 01:00 PM
The 7500 is one of their lower end units. It does not compare to the V1 at all.
The comparison is V1 to the 8500 X50. The 8500 X50 is the one that keeps beating out V1. This tells me why so many folks scream V1 over Escort. Escort offers several different levels, so if you compare the 200 escort to the V1...V1 wins...hands down. V1 offers a high end model only, so one has to compare it to the competitors high end products to be fair.
The ratings do show the 7500 to be a fairly good unit.....it just isn't in the same class as the 8500 X50 or the Valentine.
I ordered the V1 last night. The two are so close in the way they operate, I went with the V1 because I like the way it shows boggeys...LOL. And the V1 is upgradeable as technology improves.

That was my experience with a crappy detector. Cruising through Louisianna at 120+ MPH with Pink Floyd resonating through my chemically induced trance. My rocky Mountain Radar...just singing along with me. Looked in the rear view and one hill behind me I see the flashing lights comming my way.
Busted...fortunately the jammer part of the Rocky Mountain did it's job...he nabbed me at 84 in a 70. That detector hasn't been hooked up since.

I have an Escort 7500. I've been using it for about 4-5 years. It works great. I can't justify the cash to upgrade to the 8500. IMHO, the v1 and escort probably work about the same, but the v1 is hideous! It looks about as good as a turd in a punch bowl.

I understand what you mean.. but I've been seeing this little vendetta for at least 15 years now. Mike Valentine was one of the co-founders of Escort, and he split off when he decided that Escort was moving in the wrong direction, and of course made the V1. Shortly after that, the feud began, and it hasn't quit.
Conceptually, the V1 was a natural evolution: twin receivers, computerized reception, DSP programming, bogey counters, signal meters, arrows. And it really does the job, and well.

The V1 is the only magnesium case real radar locating tool. Anything else is just a blinking, blirping videogame on your dash board. I want to know how many and where. I can't tell you how many times I have seen a squad car ahead of me and yet there was another elsewhere shooting radar. Any other detector would just go beep. The V1 tells me the threat is beside or behind me or two ahead of me etc...

Rocks, you'll probably read this in the manual (unless your'e a REAL MAN and don't read manuals :hammer: ), but I'm gonna reiterate it anyway, because it's way important:
When you first get the V1, run it on "report all contacts" mode; this will help teach you how it responds to various inputs, like radar, motion sensors, door openers, etc. As you get used to how it works, then you can put it on either "half-logic" mode (a small "L" in the display), or "full-logic" mode (big "L"). Both modes report all contacts, but will eliminate any signals the computer thinks are "spurious contacts", such as door openers, which tend to be fairly weak and move quickly from front-to-rear.
So, enjoy your V1, you made a great investment. :tu:
BTW, post links to the M20 Blinders: I'm curious.

I have the 8500 X50. It shows how many, just not where. It shows you what type of how many, I think 3 of each) I have mine go off showing 8 at one time. At least two were cops, evenident by me slowing down and two guys zipping pass me and getting pulled over. I've been hit with laser. It showed it. Don't know if it was picked up on from scatter, but I didn't get pulled over. Oh, and it is also programmable when new software comes out, and if you went with an Escort Z3 jammer, the detector and the jammer work in tandem.

I used the V1 in the Acura on the run to Indy and back. It picked up laser (scatter) and saved my bacon at least twice (in Ohio). Then it picked up the normal radar stuff a bunch of times over and back.. There was one other case where a policeman (not a cop) was helping a couple on the side of the road and left his radar on to warn folks..
I love the V1 and Terry did the hard line install.. Wouldnt have it any other way.
