That's right, you heard it here first.. Will Work For Beer/Pizza session, courtesy of yours truly and Mike/PoorSVTMan. :tu:
SATURDAY, JUNE 25, 2005, NOON O'CLOCK :D
I've gotten my FRPP kit and my Helliwg sway bar in, and Mike was kind enough to offer up his garage, tools, expertise, and assistance in installing these items on my L. He's also said it's cool to invite anyone who wishes to join in/hang out. If it works out, we'll be doing my clunk washers as well (if the make it in), and the oil separator kit.
I will provide the beer (well, some of it anyway), the water (for those of use who prefer water), and the pizza. I will also provide some comic relief (we all know how much y'all like making fun of me!! PERFECT OPPORTUNITY to do it in person!).
More details will come as an edit to this post, including times and maps. Please post up, let us know if you're gonna make it, so we can get enough beer/drinks together.
And thanks in advance to Mike, and to anyone else who shows up and pitches in. :tu:
EDIT: Based on what Mike said, unless we can twist his arm into moving his alighnment a bit earlier in the day, we best be there at the crack of noon if we want to get done and not be rushed.
I will have the drinks there, if someone get drunk and dies, it's not my responsibility [/legal disclaimer] And if ya kill someone else and don't die, I'll kill ya myself. :evil The pizza will be oredered during the seesion.
No matter who shows up, I thank you all in advance, especially Mike, for his tools and expertise and kindness. :tu:

I'm assuming this is Saturday?

Well, hell, you don't really need to be there... I mean, once she sinks the nose ring in place, that's all that REALLY matters, so sending a mannequin would do the trick... :d

Wow.. what a day... talk about some excellent times!!
First off: Mike, Joey: thanks for all your hard work. You guys did a great job, and the damn truck hauls friggin' ASS now!! :tu: You guys rock!! knana Also, Mike's Mom, Debbie: thanks for letting us use your garage, you are the coolest mom on the planet! ;)
Second off: to the guy who showed (Jason, Brook, Greg, Larry): thanks for y'alls support, even if you just stood around and gabbed. Jason, special thanks to you for putting hands and wrenches to the right shackle.
All in all, the day went very well. I'll post up pics of the work and how the truck looks, likely tomorrow, when I get the "after" pics.
Again, thanks for all y'alls support: it was most appreciated. If all involved ever make it to a meeting (this means you MIKE, take an early day off, dammit!), I'm buying the bunch of y'all a round of  .
Great job, let's do this again soon.

Okay, here we go... the pics:
I thought about posting the "before" pics, but changed my mind, and will post them last, to show the comparison.

The end link hardware sent by Hellwig/Summit was WAY too long for this application, so we recycled the stock bolts and spacers:
http://viral-humanity.info/gallery/albums/WWFB-lowering-kit/PICT0098.jpg
But the bolts were STILL too long, so we took one of the Hellwig spacer tubes and cut a pair of 3/4" spacers for the end links:
http://viral-humanity.info/gallery/albums/WWFB-lowering-kit/PICT0099.jpg
Yep, that works now:
http://viral-humanity.info/gallery/albums/WWFB-lowering-kit/PICT0100.jpg
http://viral-humanity.info/gallery/albums/WWFB-lowering-kit/PICT0110.jpg
Now for the bump stops... stock compared the the FRPP supplied piece:
http://viral-humanity.info/gallery/albums/WWFB-lowering-kit/PICT0111.jpg
Stock bumpstop in place--think maybe I've been hitting them on a regular basis?? :d

Driver's side: Houston, we have a problem... :(
http://viral-humanity.info/gallery/albums/WWFB-lowering-kit/PICT0115.jpg
We couldn't find the other FRPP bumpstop!! :eek2: We looked high and low, Mike even called Jason to see if he had absconded with it (since we discovered his L is riding on its bumpstops, we thought he maybe swiped it!! JUST KIDDING, Jason! :d). Finally, Mike just went ahead and put in these conical ones he had laying around. This shows the difference between the FRPP bumpstop and Mike's stops:
http://viral-humanity.info/gallery/albums/WWFB-lowering-kit/PICT0117.jpg
Of course, after we had 'em all in and the truck down, we were cleaning up and I was about to take it for a test spin, when we found the missing stop: dummy me had laid it on the topper rail, and then we shut it atop it; we didn't find it 'til I went to close the tailgate!! So I've got an extra set of bumpstops if anyone needs any... :tu:
But, before all that, I put in the oil separator kit:
Passenger side:
http://viral-humanity.info/gallery/albums/WWFB-lowering-kit/PICT0118.jpg
Driver side:
http://viral-humanity.info/gallery/albums/WWFB-lowering-kit/PICT0119.jpg
I did it the way I described in the oil-separator thread--at least, I *thought* I had, for some reason I couldn't quite remember how the driver's side needed to be plumbed; and to top that off, I lost one of the valve discs in a check valve, so it wasn't gonna work right to begin with. :(
Tex Arcana
06-27-2005, 01:28 AM
So, on that note, I hit the road and headed home. GAWD, I can't believe how well that thang corners now!! :eek2: Makes me wish I did this sooner!
And, no, the story ain't over (get another cuppa joe, Rocks, yer gonna need it): Me and my wife met with Ronald and Elaine for dinner, and I took the truck to show him how it looked and all. When we got done eating, he and I went for a spin in the truck, with a few WOT runs and some hard turns, then back to their place to upload most of the pics. However, we smelled some oil coming from under the hood--and, lo and behold, the dipstick was out about an inch! :flaming: Idjit me, I screwed up the check valve arrangement. So after uploading the pics, Ronald and I went out to pull the passenger side work, and just put the separator in with no valves, thusly:
http://viral-humanity.info/gallery/albums/WWFB-lowering-kit/PICT0140.jpg
THis shows the system today, after driving home from Ronald's, and after running an errand for the wife (which had a couple of WOT runs); it's already collecting oil, and properly. The other side:
http://viral-humanity.info/gallery/albums/WWFB-lowering-kit/PICT0142.jpg
isn't showing anything. I can't tell if it's flowing "properly" or not, so I've got to have a longer look at things. I've also got steel wool in the lines directly above the valve covers, to act as a filter.
Okay, here are the before and after pics:
Before:
http://viral-humanity.info/gallery/albums/WWFB-lowering-kit/PICT0031.jpg
After:
http://viral-humanity.info/gallery/albums/WWFB-lowering-kit/PICT0124.jpg
Before:
http://viral-humanity.info/gallery/albums/WWFB-lowering-kit/PICT0034.jpg
After:
http://viral-humanity.info/gallery/albums/WWFB-lowering-kit/PICT0127.jpg
The gallery is located here (http://viral-humanity.info/gallery/view_album.php?set_albumName=WWFB-lowering-kit&page=1), and there are pics of a tapemeasure on each wheel, starting with the right front, going around to the left front.
Total drops:
Right front: 1-3/4"; right rear: 1-1/8"; left rear: 1-3/8"; left front: 1-11/16".
These drops have me a bit confused: shouldn't've they been 1" in front, and 2" in back?? THe shackles are in the highest hole, which *should* be 2" total. If someone can shed some light on this, I'll be grateful for it.
As for the kit and the sway: DAMN. Just DAMN. It's a smidgen harsher, and until I get it aligned, I won't know how much, but it definitely handles better, reacts more quickly, and corners flatter. Also, under acceleration, it doesn't seem to rock back as much.
Anyway, there it is.. it probably gave Rocks an anyeurism, but what the hey.
Again, thanks to Mike, Joey, and the rest... it was a great day. :tu::beer:

Thanks Rocks.. I'm lovin' it... :d
I screwed up today, tho: I forogt to take pics of the clunk-washer install. But I did (maybe) "discover" a way to eash installation a bit: put the jack under the back arm where the clunks go, to help align the hole a bit.
It was pretty easy, besides accidentally pulling the wrong bolt :hammer:, and having to break the bolts loose.
NOw, tomorrow, I get it aligned. :tu:

Hey John (Tex),
How many times did you tell me that a hollow (read: lighter) swaybar was better than a solid (read: heavy) bar of equal diameter, given the torsional stiffness of each... A Which one is it man? Make up your mind!

A solid bar of a given diameter is always stiffer than any hollow bar of the same outer diameter; the key to hollow bars is you can cut weight up to 15% with 90% of the torsional stiffness of the similar solid bar.
THe choice of the Hellwig was twofold: one was price, the other was the torsional stiffness. THe kit is nice, and included everything I needed to install it, and I love that price; and now I'm loving that flat cornering. :nana:
