I was installing a pulley on a Lightning Friday about 6pm at the shop. When my friends mom drives up in distress. She asks me to go to her house a few blocks away and find her sons finger. This guy and I are good friends from grade school. So I jump in the Duty and smoke a trail to her house. He is already at the hospital and they told her to find the finger so maybe they could re-attach it. He has a nice JET table saw and was setting up his Dado blades to make a 3/4" receiver groove in a piece of wood. I knew whatever we found could not be useful as a Dado blade is actually about 5 blades in one 3/4 wide. I dug through the box of shavings and saw dust. I found the tip with his nail and the 3/4 midsection the Dado minced. I washed the saw dust off and put it in a cup for her to take to the hospital. The plastic surgeon agreed nothing was salvagable and cut the bone back to the second knuckle and nubbed it off. I decided to be a pal and do the clean up of the scene. I figured he wouldn't want to come home to see the remnants of the carnage. I also washed his truck and finished the wood project he was working on. It sucks to see a friend suffer a loss like this over a STUPID mistake. He knew better and even thought to himself 'this is dangerous' just before the board slipped out of the saw. Veterans get hurt worse than newbies it seems. They learn a habit of sucess and stop taking the usual precautions. Please be careful in your garages and shops guys. I do not like having to scrounge up body parts:( .
