well some of you remember me buying the wife a bmw a little over a year ago, i read so many people on internet saying it was greatest thing since sliced bread, then a few people saying they are HORRIBLE, stay away... well I wish I had listened to those...

just put car in shop again today and now they want yet another $1500. This is crazy... car had 39k miles on it when we bought it, since then we have had to replace

Transmission
Thermostat
Idler
rear window motor
power steering pump
pulleys
belts
radiator

prolly a few other things I cant remember.. Warranty went out at 50k miles and the tranny went out RIGHT AT 50k so I got lucky there... I know little things like belts, etc are going to go out eventually... but I just never had a car have so many problems... seems like every other month its in shop for something....

needless to say, this time it gets out im trading it in for explorer or something bigger (kid #2 will be here in 3 months)

anyone have anything good or bad to say about a 2002+ explorer?

The Explorer is an overall good car IMO

The only problem I have with used cars is that you are buying another person's problem

As far as BMW, they are a poor mans Benz, they are one of the cheapest put together cars out there, including the M3 and M5 (saying this from a buddy who is a BMW mechanic)

We just removed a 2002 Explorer from our house. We bought it used with about 34k on it back in March. From then till now, we had a problem with the transmission, the air conditioning stopped working in the upper vents (not the defrost vents, but the next lower), and an automatic window stopped working.

I really like Ford, but that particular vehicle just wasn't working for us.

Here's a website that has a lot of reviews by individuals who actually own the car. Not sure if you can sort on just 2002, but it's good reading info anyway.

Some people just hate their cars no matter what, so you kind of have to slog through the mess looking for the objective ones.

Good luck with whatever you get.

thanks, i know no matter what we get we are purchasing the extended warranty. Id rather not buy brand new and get something with 20-30k miles and save the thousands of dollars... used cars are so cheap right now

Hey Scott,
I just got a '99 Sport about 2 months ago. As always you're welcome to stop by. I'm sure you seen it in front of the house.

BMW stands for Big Money Waste. I wouldn't buy one of those POSs even if it handled like a European gymnast :rll: ...get rid of that crap mobile and get you a real vehicle.

My dad just passed 150k miles on his '96 5.0 Explorer XLT. The engine and trans have been perfect. No problems whatsoever. At 100k miles he had the plugs changed and put new wires on it. LOL. It has had new rear axle bearings installed and the front suspension needed a little attention, but heck... 150k miles!

He plans to keep it to 200k miles, unless the engine or trans go before then.

He bought the truck new and keeps it maintained, but he is not anal or really careful about his cars like most of us are. So its not like its been pampered or anything, and yet it has given him no major problems.

Knock on wood...but I've been very happy with mine so far. I have almost the identical car to Scott for my daily driver except mine has the automatic not the steptronic transmission. I've driven and worked on all different brands, types, and ages of cars over the past few years and just couldn't stand how it seems like 90% of most all cars start rattling and falling apart within about 3 years or so. BMW's are one of the few cars that, like mine, are tighter feeling after 6 years than any domestic car after 6 months.

All vehicles are going to break. It just sucks for BMW owners because they are so darn expensive to fix. If you buy any car out of warranty you have to expect some repairs. If you buy a BMW out of warranty you can expect those repairs to be expensive.

Scott, you just have the worst luck with cars. I don't know what it is, but you did buy your BMW from a Used car dealer and it already had modifications? I'm always skeptical of any vehicle for sale with modifications especially performance modifications.
