Noticed in the thread about Riding Lawn Mower / Tractor, that there are a few folks who have to cut the grass in their "bar ditch". Just curious if anyone knows where that term comes from? I have the answer and will post it if anyone is interested.

this will win you a point in triva pursuit or a free beer at most bars.
The ditch (sometimes one on each side) to the side of a road is a "borrow ditch", so named because that is where the fill is borrowed from to build up the roadway. In Texas, the southwest, and midwest it occurs mostly in rural and farm to market roads. The word borrow, was pronounced as bara, barrie, bar'er and other similar southern drawl sounds over the past three or four generations, to the point that most people today learn it as bar ditch from their parents. Civil engineers and other geeks like myself still know them as borrow ditches. :Bullshit
