In a world of anonymous "appliance" sedans, Ford's new Fusion boasts a provocative chrome grille and a taut, clean body.

The 2006 Ford Fusion

But the Fusion – the most important new car at this year's State Fair of Texas – will need to be more than just another pretty face in the crowd. It's attempting to crack the hyper-competitive midsize sedan segment dominated by Japanese heavyweights Toyota, Honda and Nissan.

"We think we have an opportunity here because while consumers have told us that they want a car they can count on, they also want one that stands out," said Dan Geist, Fusion marketing brand manager. "It's a niche we can fill."

With Ford Motor Co. intent on competing again in midsize sedans – after decades as a leader in trucks – the Fusion has emerged as the company's most significant new car in 20 years, company officials say.

Built on the highly regarded Mazda6 platform, it has drawn positive reviews and should be at dealerships this month.

"This is our ticket back into the car business," said Ben Poore, Ford Division car group marketing manager.

Besides the Fusion, the other major new vehicle at the State Fair will be the 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe sport-utility vehicle, a truck critical to embattled General Motors Corp. The auto displays at the fair open today and run through Oct. 23.

The truck, which will be officially unveiled at the State Fair, is the first all-new Tahoe in six years. And the GM assembly plant in Arlington is the lead factory for the Tahoe and will begin building it in December.

The current Tahoe has about a 60 percent share of the full-size SUV segment, and GM is counting heavily on the new truck – with its aerodynamic styling, increased power, better fuel economy and greater refinement – to retain that share.

"We think we will have what it takes to continue to be No. 1," said Carl Hillenbrand, Chevrolet product manager.

Some of the other new vehicles at the fair include:

•The dually version of Dodge's 2006 Ram Mega Cab. For those who prefer their pickups supersized, Dodge is taking its already large four-door Mega Cab and adding optional dual rear wheels that make the truck wider and give it more payload capacity.

•The 2007 Ford Explorer Sport Trac. The Sport Trac is a Ford Explorer midsize SUV with a small pickup bed on the back. The new model has the Explorer's smoother-riding independent rear suspension, a much stiffer chassis and an optional 4.6-liter V8 with 292 horsepower.

•The Lincoln Zephyr and Mercury Milan, Lincoln and Mercury's versions of the Fusion.

•The 2006 Chevrolet Impala, which has been lightly restyled and is available with a 303-horsepower V8 engine.

•The Saab 9.7X. Based on the Chevrolet TrailBlazer-GMC Envoy, the 9.7X is Saab's first midsize SUV.

2007 Sport trac will still be made in vanilla mode

the one you were thinking of is including the Ford Sport Trac Adrenalin (http://www.svt.ford.com/vehicleSportTrac.asp), the industry's first performance sport-utility truck, in 2007.

It's a normal truck offering from Ford. The SVT version will be different. It's like they do with the Mustangs. They publish the #'s for the generic model, GT etc. and the SVT line is launched later with their #'s

Yep. This is right on the money. If the _base_ model is 292hp, then that bodes well for the SVT version. :) Of course, they have to actually produce it first.

why would they release THAT as an adrenaline? they should have kept that name for the SVT vehicle only!! the only reason i can think of for doing it is they are going to call the SVT sport trac something other than an adrenaline.

When the sport trac was first introduced they had a "Adrenaline" package that you could get. It got rid of all the plastic on the exterior, and added some black chrome step bars among other things. Then SVT came up with the Adrenaline concept. I have no idea why they used the same name, but they are two different things. The Sport Trac Adrenaline is just a higher package of the regular Sport Trac. The SVT Adrenaline will be the performance model. If/When it comes out, I hope they change the name to get rid of the confusion.

That is the history of Ford going back to.....geez.....the first Cobra in 93, then came the SHO Taurus......or going back further the SVO Mustangs from 84-86 (although technically not an SVT model it was considered by Ford the future of hotrodding at the time).

I remember this being the article that made me plunk down 1K the next week on a Lightning sight unseen. I didn't get delivery for 6 more months

Hey Tommy,
Hey man just to set the record straight, the SHO was out before the first Cobra in '93. The first SHO came out in the late '80's.

Oops your right, got my story backwards....must be old age setting in. :hammer:

What did SHO stand for? I know SVO was Special Vehicle Operations which was later combined with all the high performance divisions to make SVT-Special Vehicle Teams

If I'm not mistaken SHO stood for "Super High Output", which it actually was back in the late 80's when those things were introduced. I forget what their exact factory rating was 1989, but I believe it was somewhere around 200 HP or so. This out of a Naturally Aspirated V-6 that was actually built by Yamaha.

When you take into consideration that the 5.0's, T/A's, Z-28's, and Vette's of the day, with their 300+CID motors were all rated at between 225 and 250HP(give or take); 200+HP out of a N/A 6 cylinder was pretty damn impressive.:tu:

The very first ass kicking(very first race actually) I got in my L was at the hands of a certain SHO in South Arlington that had a little Vortech S-trim(among other things) hidden under its delapidated hood. That thing absolutely sucked the doors off of my truck. Very valuable lesson learned that day.;)

Oh yea, that was priceless:D I remember that day. I think that was your first day with the L. I've always wondered what you were telling your buddy before we ran "hey check this out, I'm going to blow this taurus away".:throw:

Hey Rob, how've you been, haven't seen you in a while?

Wow, I just signed on and I'm mentioned here. Cool!

My feelings too. That thing looks like some kind of hybrid bastardization. What are people thinking when they buy something that fugly? Is it..."hey everybody, look at me, I am retarded" ? Or is it..."hey everybody, look at me, in the true tradition of the yuppie, I drive the fugliest looking ride on the road"? I dunno....but I do know that Ford needs to sh!t can that thing.
