This belonged to my father-in-law. It will be part of the estate dispersed among the four surviving children. If my wife ends up with it, I may consider getting my CHL. Anyone have an idea what it is worth?

I want first dibz D. :D
Seriously though. I used to own an identical one and it's on my list of guns from my collection that I had to sell off in 93 to pay my divorce atourney.
According to my Blue Book of Gun Values 26th edition, a pre series 70 satin nickel Colt Combat Commander in 45 acp in 90% condition, which from your pic is what I'm guessing, would bring $750-800. If you can find the original box that would add another $100 to it's value if you decided to sell it.
Of course, I would expect a Talon members discount. :d

Nice heirloom, and Gary is right on regarding the value.

By looking at the grips wiht the gold stamp it look to be a modle 70. If so they go for around $500 used and $700 to $740 new. By the looks of the gun in the pics It looks in exclent condition. I would say around $650 or so. Nice gun by the way.:tu:

Good looking pistol, Dennis. I've always liked the classic lines of the Colt Govt. Model .45.
FYI, I gave $550 NIB retail for my Series 80 in Ultimate-Bright in '96.

I agree with Gary on the original box and paperwork.

Uh Sixer,
Has your brain turned to mush???? Who is a collector of .45s?
BTW, I have 14 or 15 holsters for that pistol that would carry it about anywhere you could imagine. I would recommend the CHL and keep it, but if you start to get rid of it, I think it would look nice with the other ones I have.:D
You need to bring it out to the farm --- I have about 1500 loaded rounds that need to be cycled.

Carried one just like it (packmyer (sp) grips though) during my AF tour. My dad gave it to me the day I graduated from Basic. I loved that gun.

As long as we're posting pics of our Colts, here's my pre series 70 Combat Government.

Well, fine. :) Early WWII Colt manufactured 1911A1. Made for lend lease to GB. Released by the British government in 1952. Not sure where it went from there, but my dad carried it in Vietnam, as I have the paperwork where it came out of RVN. Don't know if it was a personal weapon he took with him, if he bought it there, if it was a captured war trophy, or what. I do know that he tagged a sapper with it during Tet. :tu:

Moonshine wins...Gary is runner up. Sixpipes is third. Ronald gets nothing for having a pistol that looks like it belongs to some guy with a yellow cowboy hat, sporting feathers comming out the top.

But I really like the way you can see the reflection of Ronald's fingers and camera in the slide of his pimp.... er, I mean pistol.

I like picking on Ron as much as the next guy but - I have to say I have always liked Stainless guns - if for no other reason than they are easier to clean and keep clean. Im guessing the "pimp version " would be easy as well...

Dang. I made the podium and I wasn't even trying. I needed the fair market value because of the way the estate will be settled. I found out my father-in-law bought it from his brother about 15 years ago for $350.

I like stainless handguns too, but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to give Ronald grief about the finger/camera reflection. :evil Shiny or not, you won't find me volunteering to stand in front of that piece.

Dennis,
Maybe that should give some idea of the FMV of your .45. Good luck.
Brian,
Very interesting story! Can you imagine being a GI tunnel-rat given a .45 and a flashlight and ordered to kill Charlie in a "gopher-hole" barely wide enough to get your shoulders in? Tell your Father, thanks for his Service for me. :)
One of my college-friends/usher's Dad lost an eye on Hamburger Hill. The thing is, he's still proficient with the Gov't Model .45 with either hand. :tu:
Doug,
Yes, I swear by stainless-steel firearms - very resistant to corrosion! My Colt .45 Gov't Model, Ruger M-77 Mk. II in .300 Win. Mag. (black synthetic stock) and Remington .50 cal / Synthetic Mossy-Oak Breakup stock black powder rifle are all stainless. Dad agree's,too - same Ruger rifle in .30-06 and his Springfield Custom Loaded .45 stainless. Uncle Raymond has the same exact rifle in .223 Rem. - dispatches coyotes, regularly.
To give you an idea - Regan (younger brother) didn't clean my blackpowder after he dropped an 8-ptr. last year with it and didn't clean my rifle. :hammer: I was torqued, but I was out of the state at the time. Black-powder is very corrosive and it's a big no-no to not clean black-powders very well after shooting them, as he knew this.
The rifle had the usual sludge in it after numerous firings, but the rifle is tip-top as Dad and I have almost polished the bbl-innards after sitting dirty for months. Black-powder opening day is Saturday! knana
As for all the chromey .45 hater's out there with nothing but inflammatory characterizations for The :ron:, I'll have y'all know all us gangsta'-pimps roll tight with our bling-bling .45s. :D Check my stats!:d
Adam, you're going to have to help me on this whole slang stuff. :d
Seriously, in the future, I would like to go with a full-length guide-rod, skeletonized trigger, ambidextrous extended safeties, extended slide-release and some trigger work for a smoother-break.
Those high-capacity Kimber's with the polymer frame / stainless-steel slide look nice! Pick up a bone-stock Colt and a Kimber sometimes for a comparison and shake it side-to-side. The Colt sounds almost like nuts & bolts in a bucket - the Kimber is tight! But, the Colt was a pistol intended with combat conditions in mind.
BTW, my .45 below hasn't been cleaned since Elaine and I put a good number of rds. through it recently. I'm proud of Sweetie, she's actually a pretty good shot with it.

I thought that pimps only carried nines :D
My wife has a "pimp" gun. It is a S&W 39-2 with the factory nickel plating. We then added some mother-of-pearl grips to really make it a pimp gun :tu:
I just use my Glock 21. Not as pretty but just as effective.

As for mine, Dad's been dead for 33+ years, or I'd ask him about the history of that gun, and others.
