Sh!t :ron: . I was almost afraid to click your post. I just knew I was about to see pictures of your Lightning burned up. I am afraid to take mine in for the recall. They might void my warranty if they see the air filter mod I did.

Ron, go ahead and take it in. There's no way they'll void your warranty! If you want to be safe you should demod before taking it in just to be safe :rll:
I got my notice in the mail last week. I all ready have it disconnected...just need to take it in for the replacement. What a pain in the ass...why can't they just give me the damn part and let me plug it in??

ditto- I've had both my disconnected when I first heard about the issue with 01's. I go to the dealership yesterday driving the beater and with my recall notices. They won't give them to me- they said its a liability issue.

Is this problem specific for a particular year?

Originally the recall was 01's only. They later expanded it to many years F150's (L's), Explorers, Expy's. I got a recall for my 95 and 99 so it least goes back that far.

So all I have to do is unplug the cruise control wire? If somebody has a pic of where that connector is attached, I will unplug mine and call it done. It is highly unlikely I will ever use the cruise control anyway.
Thanks

There are lots of pictures - its easy just unplug the connector coming off the top of the front end of the master cylinder

Yep, I've got to get mine into the dealership ASAP to make sure all's good with the L.:(
I cringe at the thought of the L possibly going down in flames like the Hindenberg in the attached garage and making crispy-critters of us.:o
Here's some reading-material on the subject : http://www.detnews.com/2005/autosinsider/0506/17/0auto-219119.htm
"Lawyers for the family said an investigation showed the fire started in the pickup's cruise control deactivation switch and spread through the family's garage into their home.
Ford spokeswoman Kathleen Vokes said Thursday that an inspection at the Mohlis' house "demonstrates conclusively that the fire did not originate from the 1996 Ford F-150, and specifically not from its speed control deactivation switch."
She said evidence suggests that the fire started elsewhere in the garage, spreading to the truck and the home.
"Ford continues to work and cooperate with NHTSA on its investigation of this tragic incident," Vokes said in a statement."
Yeah, right!:hammer:

The plug right on top of the master cylinder. I know exactly which plug that is. I will be disconnecting that damn thing ASAP.
Thanks for the info...I know we have pounded on this one before, I just couldn't remember for sure on the plug local. Thanks again.

all they do is put a fuseable link in it like GM has been doing for years.... So instead of letting the plug get nice and hot the fuse will just pop...

I took my 94L in for the recall about a week after they expanded it to 94+ trucks. I guess I got there before they started cheaping out and using fused harnesses, as they replaced the whole switch with the new style ones.

The new harness is a fused link... may not be for the gen 1s but gen 2 is a fuseable link.
Also its not going to look like a cheap inline fuse.. Its all wired up and looks like a regular harness.

As a follow-up, I took mine to Bankston-Frisco :hammer: today with the recall notice in-hand.
He popped off the wiring harness, tucked it out of the way and said the "fuse-fix" would be available in approx. a week from Furd. :evil
Cruise control doesn't work now, but I never use it anyway.
