The pistol is a G34 Glock 34 tactical model. It was converted "manufactured" by a local machinist to auto. Ron was correct that the G18 is the only auto manufactured by Glock new. The original units were not ported they addded this feature a few years later and I do not like the port on anything..
There were several different models fired Dana, starting with a 9mm H&K MP5-SD which is what 90% of SWAT teams used for an entry carbine for decades. Recently many depts have switched to Colt M16 Commandos which are 5.56/223 caliber and use a colapsable 6 position stock and 11.5" upper barrel assy. I would marry for a Commando:bows

I don't understand SWAT's theories on going to .223 v. 9mm (or .40) for entry work in an urban environment. I would think they would have all kinds of over-penetration issues.
I was fortunate enough to see 2 SWAT entry teams at work. They had a mix of MP-5 series and CARs - that was '98.
Those guys don't mess around.

Exactly the opposite the 9mm was overpenetrating and not stopping bad guys in the process. The 223 as a much more flexible ammo like tactical/frangible and it does a better job without overpenetrating bad guys and walls. Most days of the week 9mm sucks.

Hmm... I remember the Miami / FBI shootout in the '80s where the old-school 9mm ammo didn't drop the bad-guys as expected. Evidently, that was the impetutus for the .40 infusion.
But, the 9x19 has it's place, depending on it's application.

T is right, there's actually less risk of overpenetration with properly selected .223 ammo. More importantly, as I've seen time and time again, pistol bullets poke holes in folks, while rifle bullets put them down.

We have a 9mm because it is cheaper to shoot at the range than my .45 and because it fits Stacy's hand better. Of course we don't have our firearms for home/self protection, we have them to put holes in paper :D
Last I heard, federal officers are now switching to the .40 as well.

I suppose higher-speed softer-nosed projectiles like the Glasers and others do better in a CQB setting while fragmenting faster and not exiting.
What's your take on the Strasbourg Tests? I see temporary/permanent wound-channels and those debates going back-and-forth with ballistic Jello-O in there too.
Also, Moonshine, what're your opinions on the Black Talons v. Hydra-Shoks? I understand some/most skilled-operators alternate them in their magazines and keep mental count of exactly how many rounds are spent and cycle a magazine in a fire-fight with the last rd. in chamber - and "keep on truckin'".:eek2: Is this correct?

Glasers and their type make nasty surface wounds, but don't reliably penetrate far enough to reach vital organs and major blood vessels.
Strasbourg tests are helpful if you expect an attack by homicidal goats. I put far more credence in the FBI data on actual shootings of people.
Black Talons and Hydra Shoks are both good bullets that routinely perform relatively well. Currently, the best performing handgun bullets are bonded core, and all of the major ammo manufacturers are making bonded core defensive ammo. Our duty handgun ammo used to be Hydra Shoks, but now we're carrying Speer Gold Dot. IMHO, the three most important factors in surviving a fight using a handgun are shot placement, shot placement, and shot placement. Followed very distantly by projectile construction, and then further back by caliber (within reason). Last is handgun type, with the best type being the kind that goes "bang" when you need it to. Other than that, it's all personal preference. YMMV.
As for alternating ammo types, counting rounds, and always tactically reloading, great stuff for SOF and other rags, but not very realistic.
In my experience (19 years) the only shooting we've been involved in where any one officer fired more than two rounds was one involving an MP5, with 18 rounds fired (at 800 RPM, that was a 1.3 second burst, but it sounded like it went on for a week). No one has reloaded, and most have only fired 1 shot. Nationally, the hit ratio for cops in actual gunfights is 20%. For over 15 years, we had a 100% hit ratio, and we're still well into the 90's. Remember, LE is not like military combat. We "own" every bullet we launch, and to accidentally poke a hole in someone unintended is a career ending maybe if I'm really lucky I won't go to prison kinda' oops. Consequently, we're pretty conservative about launching bullets willy nilly in an urban environment, and our folks generally do an incredible job of being mindful of what's beyond the intended target while facing a life threatening attack.
And, as always, handguns are for when you're not expecting a gunfight. Long guns are for fighting, handguns are to keep you alive until you can get to a long gun.

Great posts, but I need some clarification.
My Ruger 9mm revolver was purchased brand new 20 years ago.. it is still like new and has had fewer than 100 rounds fired thru it. I keep it in the house for "just in case" purposes. In reading the responses, it wont do what I need it to do in the area of stopping someone, but it will do one thing well. It shoots when you pull the trigger because I felt a revolver wouldnt jam.
I also have a Ruger mini-14 Ranch rifle .223 cal. I was going to convert it to a metal wire stock from the wood one now, have it machined to make it an auto, then get a few 60 round clips and tape them together.. this is for when I need something for all out war... havent done the mods, havent shot it in years, and most likely will sell it in the near term..
So what would you guys advise for someone that doesnt shoot his guns a lot but wants some protection at home? sell or keep what I have?

A shotgun is a tired and true hall sweeper it never misses all of a person. 4 buck is a good size for not going though interior walls. A rifle would be the second choice. If you know you are going to engage someone a pistol is the last and poorest choice.

In the shotgun world a pump is quivalent to a revolver in reliability. The autos tend to be more cranky on ammo and maintenance and lube. A reliable pump shotgun starts at $250 at Wal Mart

You can legaly cut the barrel down to 18" I usually leave and extra 1/4" for luck. I always run 2.75" shells as the 3" shells can have issues cycling in extreme circumstances. Low recoil Federal Tactical buck is low muzzle flash powder and smooth shooting stuff. Magazine extension tubes are easily available for two or three more rounds I like to have as many rounds as possible. Stock is 4+1 my Benelli M1S90 is 8+1 ;)

I'd say keep what you have. Your Ruger 9mm revolver, stoked with the right ammo and an extra full moon clip, makes a great bedside gun. Simple, low maintenance, reasonably effective (as handguns go), and low recoil.
If you have more warning of impending trouble, grab the Mini-14. I'd skip all the stuff you were talking about doing to it. Some is illegal, and the rest is unnecessary. It's a great home defense gun as is.
If you ever want to sell that Ruger revolver, keep me in mind. I always liked those.

I can vouch for that. I always said I loved my dog for protection. He was better than a loaded weapon of any kind. People aren't scared of guns these days but a 100lb angry dog, they run like hell! Of course my dog was a professionally trained protection and aggressive dog. He was not a pet he was a working dog. HE hated children, strangers, etc. He killed 2 pit bulls, one cocker spaniel, and a half dozen cats. HE even killed my dad's shitzu when it dug under the dividing fence. All of that carnage was when I lived in the Irving ghetto bacause folks never kept their dogs under control. The two pits were a neighbors and they broke through the picket fence while I was at work. I had him neutered and retrained when I bought my new house in 1999 in Arlington. He calmed down 100% from that. But it was good that he was so aggressive in Irving as it was a war zone and he was the perfect deturrnet of crime. A nice friendly bog dog is not much more help from a tactical standpoint. My own friends and family would not go into my back yard without me. That is why I will always call him my bad mother farker! A 110% antisocial and a liability to own, my best friend:tu: .

Thanks guys for your input.. I have thought about the shotgun route, but I just worry about the unwieldiness of a rifle-type device if someone is breaking in.. I dont think I would have the wherewithall to remember to pull it out.. I would instinctively go for the pistol.. the down side to the pistol has been the 6 shot capacity, although the reload is pretty fast. It has these clips that hold 3 shells each. Moonshine, my brother has been after me to sell him both my guns. He also gave me a set of rubber handgrips for the revolver. If I let it go, I will keep you in mind. However, if I keep the pistol, what ammo would you guys recommend? something that is soft point with a relatively slow velocity so as to have some impact power to it? All I have now is what I bought years ago at the gun show that was cheap.. the only rounds to go through it were when I bought it and those were remington. I am not sure what to do with the rifle. I probably ought to buy a scope, have it sighted in and go shoot the darned thing. Not being a hunter, not sure if it makes sense to keep it.

Speer Gold Dot 9mm 124 gr +P. Very good stuff. I'd also recommend replacing the 1/2 moon clips with full moon clips. Much handier, and cuts the reload time in half. :tu:
